How Soon Would You Start To Supplement Feeding

My girl had her litter this morning. - 9 puppies - at day 58 - they all seem lively and fine but some are quite small - the smallest one is only 140 grams they all seem to be able to nurse ok but so many of them for my mini poodle - but she does have big litters. Last time she went to day 60 and they were a bit bigger but day 58 is early really. I have divetalact here and usually weigh the pups about three times a day especially the small ones and give them an eye dropper of formular if I feel necessary but do you think I should see how they go over the next two or three days or start now with a little formular for the smaller ones. I have tried to divide them with the smaller ones alone but at present she doesn't like me doing this but it works if I sit with her and and keep the bigger pups around the front of her. Also with such a big litter how much and how often would you give calcium syrup she had about 20. Mils while delivering over 4 doses she has had two bowls of divetalact since the pups were born and seems pretty good only panted once after she had been out of the box for a toilet break.

No matter how many litters you have it's always a worry.

We bottle feed from day 1 if we feel its required we don't use eye droppers .We bottle feed to top up from mum & often just for a few days our last litter we did for 3 days with 3 smaller ones

We also never use calcium syrup but each to there own there

If it were my litter I would let her feed them all, taking turns if needed then top up with formula as required to those who will take it. I too have only ever used a bottle, but that is my personal preference.

If you are weighing them x3 daily and then taking a daily average you will know who is gaining weight and who isnt. This should guide you a little.

If they are all sucking from her and doing well, this would be my approach at this early stage.

I am also against the use of calcium, as I have only ever seen it cause problems. However Im sure there are many people that use it well.

Good luck and let us know how they all go.
