smashtank Posted May 19, 2013 Share Posted May 19, 2013 Omg Tank had a tantrum and a half when I put him in his pen for timeout this morning. He's asleep now quivering a little. I know I did the right thing just ignoring him and going about my business but damn that Frenchie squeal is horrific! I think I'll leave the tv and radio on when he's alone from now on. smashtank Posted May 20, 2013 Share Posted May 20, 2013 I think it's just patience. Tank is not peeing where I want him to at all. Pretty much everywhere but on his puppy toilet pads! I'm just being patient, not telling him off when he pees in the wrong spot and when he does go toilet on his pad once every five pees, give him a rub and a treat. I'm sure your pup will settle in! Just be patient and don't show him any stress if you are stressing! I think my boy relaxes because I'm relaxed with him. ---- I just got home from being out with him and popped him in his room/pen. He went to his crate and watched me close the gate. He got up and came to the gate and I was sure we were about to have a Frenchie death squeal moment but he just looked at me for s bit and trotted back to his crate. He doesn't seem to want treats or toys. He loves food so I was using his kibble as treats, but now because of his pooing problems (see other thread) he needs bland wet food. Sigh. moosepup Posted May 20, 2013 Share Posted May 20, 2013 (edited) It's perfectly fine for him to cry, it's a new environment so he needs time to adjust. :) If he's crying a few soothing words is okay but don't let him out as he'll see that whining gets him what he wants. Nacho screamed bloody murder the first couple of days :laugh: but he's right as rain now, spends time in his pen/crate very happily. Hang in there, the first few days can be overwhelming. smashtank Posted May 20, 2013 Share Posted May 20, 2013 My friend (dog specialist in NZ) said we were doing the right thing putting him in his pen and ignoring his cries. I don't think it makes them hate it unless your using it as punishment. I think Tank is pretty good at settling himself down. I'm about to leave the house to go and get some working tablets from the vet (I don't want to take him around sick dogs just yet especially as he's been out and about every day since Saturday). So hopefully he stays asleep but I will leave tv on. Don't feel bad when they cry - if you sit and watch them or give them attention I think this would give them the wrong idea. I don't feel so bad about him crying ( I know, I'm heartless :laugh: ) I was only worried that he'd end up hating the crate. I left Nacho home alone (with M&Z) for an hour the other day and recorded it on my iPad. :laugh: He was fine in his pen, cried for about 30 seconds and then just laid in his crate. He is due to have it tomorrow so I went and saw the vet today (whilst out Tank was at home alone). Now the trick will be getting him to eat it. If it's a tablet I would just pop open his mouth, push it to the back of his throat, close his mouth and rub his throat to encourage him to swallow. This is the way I do it with my dogs, no fuss and it's over in 5 seconds. I give them a real high value treat afterwards so they associate worming with positive things. Good luck! It was a last minute decision, watching him play with his sister, and seeing the breeder's worried face. Louis is well enough, very lively etc, but because its my first dog I think she'll feel a lot better having him nearby. She didn't want to say it, so I just offered :laugh: His well being and everybody's peace of mind are more important than keeping him all to myself. I think I'll be a lot less worried when he comes back, because I know what to expect. I also go lots of gardening advice from the breeder. I think I need to buy some low value treats / start using his normal food more. I've gone a bit wild with those expensive treats I ordered BUT... He sits for his treats now Hence how I managed the get this photo... I will feed him his tablet tomorrow.
