Puppy Is Not Eating

My 5 month old puppy is not eating. =(

She's very picky at the moment, she's content to munch on the fruits hanging off the pomegranate/fig/locquat trees in our backyard. *sigh*

Don't know what to do!

She does drink puppy milk and some of the doggy treats BUT she's not eating the chicken wings, chicken necks, lamb off-cuts (from our friend's yiros shop). She used to LOVE these things.

We've tried canned dog food and also the dry puppy biscuits/food, to no effect. =(

Is it because of the hot weather or is it just a phase all puppies go through?

Help!

Haven't really noticed any smell or blood but yeah, all her baby teeth have grown out now & she's got her adult teeth (finally no more painful bites lol).

She's still behaving normally, still playing the same way & always happy to see us.

She's got a routine, we feed her when we wake up in the morning and then when we get home from work. She still looks & feels the same, she hasn't lost any weight.

I haven't really noticed the poo, she poos in the same spot (near the fruit trees).

She really doesnt need the puppy milk at 5mths..........she also may be eating heaps of the fruit which is filling her up or making her feel unwell.

And yes answer all the things Persephone asked, it will help the more experienced people give advice :)

Oh really? I thought because she's still a puppy, she would need milk.

Guess I'll finish this bottle and not get her that anymore. =D

Thanks for the advice, my partner and I both think that she's full on all those fruits. Cheeky little thing.

So we're keeping her inside this whole weekend so she eats her food and only go outside to do her business. =p

:) the examination of what a dog gets rid of , and how often , is an important part of attentive dog husbandry , as it reflects what's happening on the dog's inside!

It tells us if the dog is maybe not digesting fat properly..has too much fibre, or not enough ... perhaps has colitis, or a tear somewhere.. has been eating rubbish, grass ( or fruit seeds/skin) , maybe has a bacterial infection , or something else .

A new habit for you !

My suggestions - stop puppy milk as mentioned. Also stop treats until she eats normally again .. and remember to save them for rewards for her hard work ;)

My first concern was a partial blockage or similar from the seeds she will be eating :( the pomegranate ones will pass thru OK ..but The locquat ones may cause trouble if the they get stuck .

Can you fence off the trees ?

Don't offer her any food tonight .. No treats/milk/leftovers, anything. Take her for her walk ..do her training , make sure she has plenty of water ..keep her busy indoors away from those seeds ..and see if she will eat breakfast any better tomorrow ....

If not .. it may be very wise to visit her vet and get her properly checked out :)

Just saw your post ... make sure she has several short walks , and some short training sessions to keep her occupied and not looking for her own fun .

Unfortunately, pups make their own fun , if they feel their own toys are not helping them ..or if they have no training/socialising to tire out their brain :) (bit like toddlers left alone with a texta and a blank wall ..versus a toddler helping mum with doing laundry, or using a blackboard to copy things)

Definitely cut off her supply to the fruit - either pick it up or fence it off. Too much is not going to help her even if she hasn't got a blockage or just a stomach full of seeds. Ours are obsessed with palm seeds and it's not fun when the neighbour doesn't take care of the problem and they drop over our side of the fence :mad

At this age she will probably be cutting her back teeth so this could well stop her eating anything hard. At perse has already said - give her absolutely nothing tonight and keep an eye on her.

Yep, part of dog ownership is being aware of what comes out the other end, so get used to it

What everyone else said.

I wouldn't feed her tonight either, but I would continue with the puppy milk - at least she is getting some nutrition, and if her teeth are bothering her, the milk will be easy to drink, and can have an egg added to provide more protein.

I have known quite a few dogs to gorge themselves on fruit and then refuse to eat because they are already full. It is very common with Border Collies. Cut down the access to the fruit, try the things mentioned above. If she still isn't eating, offer some roast chicken. If she won't eat that, get her to the vet. It is always my test of whether a dog is really ill or just not very hungry. Also keep in mind that she may be between growth spurts. Puppies do not grow at a constant rate and their appetite can vary a lot as a consequence.

If she's not droppin any weight and feels the same, there's agood chance that she's just had a major growth spurt. When that happens the amounts the eat and require will decrease. You'll porbably find that she'll have another one and then her eating habits and amounts will start to settle down. Teething can also impact on their eating, however I've not seen it in Staffords.

Get rid of the puppy milk, it's useless and also the fruit supply. Cut any treats or table scraps

Cut her food back to half of what you are feeding in the morning and feed her once a day. If she's eating all of that with enthusiasm, then the next morning increase the food a little. Look at her body condition and fed her accordingly, if she loses weight add a little more to her diet and if she gains it cut it back again. A measured cup of dry and a couple of chicken wings should more than suffice for a day.

If she is healthy and happy in my opinion all is well. Dogs are like people and they crave things when their body needs them pomegranets have vitamin C , vitamin K, folate and potassium and is a good source of numerous B vitamins and phosphorus. It also has polyphenols, which are antioxidants linked to the prevention of heart disease and cancer. In fact its a perfect compliment to a diet which includes milk and raw meaty bones. This is heaps and heaps better than any dry or canned dog food.

Usually puppies dont drink milk after they have been weaned but .Lots of dogs drink milk all their lives - mine do fresh from the cow so you dont have to stop feeding the milk but it is a food not just a drink so the dog is getting lots of nutrients [most of which are in meat and bones] from that too.

As dogs get older their need for regular feeding changes and some dogs make the changes quicker than others depending on size and breed and the season. Some dogs are ready to cut back to one feed a day by this age especially those on a raw meat diet. Dogs in the wild eat a big meal of meat and then don't eat again for a couple of days and or dont eat meat for a couple of days.

Some foods are also digested quicker than others.

I would offer her the raw meaty bones in the morning make sure what she doesnt eat in say 15 mins is taken away and try to limit her intake of the fruit but not entirely and let her make the decision on what she needs. Lucky dog wish I could sit around all day for a couple of weeks eating pomegranets.

If its only the last few days don't worry.

All of my cats, dogs, pups & kittens have been eating less. Its the weather. The humidity here in SA is awful at present. The temperature they show is not always accurate either. Yesterdays 34 degree forecast didn't happen here on the Adelaide Plains. It was 42 degrees by 4 o clock on my garden thermometer.

You will probably find when we get a few cooler days after Monday that she will eat more.

Glad to hear your puppy is eating better now :)

My cavalier puppy hasn't gone through that stage, i dont think she ever will, she's a cavalier after all laugh.gif

I guess its like young children, some eat heaps and others lose interest from time to time..

Long as shes keeping her weight and is healthy otherwise :)
