piper
It actually doesn't surprise me - it is their time and supplies used for a service you asked them to perform. While not directly for your benefit, it is not directly to theirs either. I would not expect it to be overly expensive though.
ness
It was there definition of "small" that I was shocked at but I guess compared to what I have spent on the rest of her appointments there what I was charged was "small" . Its certainly a relative concept. I would have thought a fee covering the vet nurses time and any materials but I know the shipping costs were picked up by the researchers otherwise that might have explained the amount charged. ness
Situation is not good - requested medical records because I thought I would book her into use the underwater treadmill only to read in the records the finding that her surgery leg as of February 2013 was dx as a high grade 2 MPL. Her leg was that before I put her through surgery and numerous amounts of physio/chiro/acupuncture. NOT IMPRESSED . So what should have happened all along was a revision surgery rather than the specialist stringing me along that things would improve from where they were. . ness
Kenz went ahead and had her first underwater treadmill session today and it was a bit of a disaster. She wasn't especially happy and her back end is a mess. Back on strict rest and only a few 1 min walks a day until her next appointment on Monday - URGH. Staff'n'Toller
Take lots of treats or a ball for her to hold in her mouth. They usually freak out a bit but they will settle. Particularly the dogs who are used to 'free reign' pool swimming, they dislike having to be on lead etc.
ness
Took heaps of treats and she was ok eating them most of the time a few times she didn't want to look at the treats either. She wouldn't walk square so he had some sort of pool noodle barrier thing and that freaked her out even more. She had lots of time just walking from one end of the tank to the other for treats at both ends. She has passive range of motion and weight shifting exercises and heat bagging of her hind end for "homework". Will see how she does on Monday I guess. Not many options for her but at least I don't have to worry about her damaging any sort of surgery if she does panic. Jumabaar
I am SURE they have checked- but is there any Iliopsoas involvement in all this? I doubt it since it happened when she wasn't competing but stumbled across an article on non-responsive hind limb lameness and (unfortunately) thought of Kenzie. ness
Yep its definitely been checked - specialist is super familiar with the condition. When I had a conversation with the rehab tech in the US that was the first thing he bought up and so I did ask the question. She had her second hydrotherapy underwater treadmill session today. It seemed to go better then her last appointment in that she was much happier on the treadmill but she doesn't really seem to be moving especially well at all. coogie
Ness, it took us at least 6-8 weeks to see a marked improvement from the hydrotherapy, I took video on my phone for while so we had a reference point.Issy both ran on the treadmill and swam in the round pool for core strength. She still goes once a week for maintenance even now 18 months later. Looking back after the first six months you could see a huge difference in her muscle tone, I know her issues are different to Kenzie's(Issy has had surgery for luxating patella and also a femoral head ostectomy) and you have been through the wringer well and truly and tried so many things. I Just wanted to say don't lose heart -if you think it is making any difference at all it is worth persisting if you can.I'd like to be able to show you the video but it was lost when the phone died sadly. I often check in on you and your girl and hope against hope you will have better news after all your hard work. Sending you a virtual hug for you both. ness
Yep I have video from today so I could have a look at it after her session. Its just hard to know if its the right decision of whether its prolonging yet another surgery decision. I felt really disappointed when I read her records and found that her surgery leg was no better then it was before surgery and really leaves me wondering about anything. . coogie
I really feel for you Ness, we had no choice with either surgery so weren't in the same position, other than the aspect of having a chronically lame , very young dog whose head constantly wrote cheques her little body couldn't cash. The only thing I would say is that now Issy can do 25 minutes at 6 or 7 K's an hour after her warm up, and back up for a walk in the afternoon; something I never dreamt would be possible -the ortho is amazed and even if the hydro only delays the surgery ,it might keep her muscle tone in other areas up in preparation for the surgery. I do believe the hydro has delayed the surgeries on her other leg, she is much sounder than she was in that leg.I know her luck may run out at any point and we could be back at square one if the other hip does go. I guess I am clinging to the idea we are keeping her as fit as possible in preparation. I understand your frustration on seeing the records, I would have been furious and very disappointed. Have you had any explanation from the specialist as to why they never raised it with you?
ness
No explanation other than Kenz's case is complicated by the neurological issue and thats why its been difficult. I have chronically lame who can't manage a walk around the block without being lame. I also have youngish dog who's brain is crying out to be put to use and who's body just can't tolerate it. This is the "complication" to Kenz's case - here is a BC collapse episode if people haven't seen one before: This is actually a fairly mild episode for her. They are much more frightening, occur more frequently and without much sign of warning now . Edited May 13, 2013 by ness
coogie
So hard, I hope you get some improvement. She looks a very special girl, she is lucky to have you. I'll keep checking in, our hydrotherapist is looking at another treatment at the moment, I am not entirely clear on the details but it sounded like a type of TENS machine for dogs. She is hoping to have a demo model in the next couple of weeks. I'll let you know if it looks like it maybe of any help at all. She is great and very blunt in her assessment of new treatments so I do trust her judgement. Just saw the video, I've never seen that before, only heard about it. It must be very distressing for you. Zug Zug
Just watched the vid - it's heartbreaking. She obviously just loves running around. Don't know what to say except hoping the rest helps and a solution for you both can be found
ness
So Kenz is finally getting the hang of the underwater treadmill and she managed a couple of 3 min stints today. Have a very tired BC now. Lucky for me since she is to be otherwise rested between sessions. Hope it helps her.

ness
So Kenz went for hydrotherapy appointment number 4 late this afternoon. A few things were modified after a conversation with a rehab guru in the US. When we tried to up the treadmill speed her propensity to bunny hop also increased. She has her final appointment of her 5 on Thursday. Not sure at this stage if I will go ahead with any more somehow I am starting to think she is to bad and its not going to help .
