Guest Roka
Hello again, Does anyone in Southern NSW (near to the ACT) know if there are any dog clubs like CDC (Companion Dog Club in Canberra) in any of the smaller rural regional towns like Goulburn or Young? The reason I ask is that I am looking for a puppy school or puppy classes to take my new puppy to and would like to do agility as well as obedience classes. We are also considering moving and I would like to pick a town with a dog club. Thanks, Roka
espinay2
I beleive there may be a club in Goulburn that may run basic classes but I don't have the details - hopefully someone can provide. (ETA Goulburn Dog Training and Kennel Club) There are puppy socialisation (generally up to 12 weeks of age) and beginners obedience classes (over 12 weeks of age) run at the Yass Vet Hospital (PM me if you want more info). If you want to go on and do Agility though, I don't know of anything local except for the clubs etc in Canberra. Guest Roka
Hi. Thanks for your reply. I've already rung Yass Vet Hospital as I noticed the banner for the Puppy School the last time I drove through there. However, it is only for very young puppy socialization and not for older puppies. Since my puppy is over 17 weeks and already lives with 2 other dogs (and already knows how to come, sit, drop etc) he has already outgrown it. I'm really looking for somewhere that does fun things we could enjoy like agility and fly ball. Thanks anyway. Roka
espinay2
The classes run by Yass vet include classes for older dogs (I know because I run them and am actually teaching two classes right now ;-) ). And yes they are fun, but we don't have equipment to do formal training in Agility and Flyball etc. To do that you have to go to clubs that have invested in the equipment etc. The clubs will not let you train over a lot of the equipment with young dogs and from what I remember (without looking it up - it has been quite a few years since I taught Agility at CDC) the dogs generally have to be over 12 months or more (they can not compete in Agility until over 18 months) and display a certain level of obedience (eg being able to follow commands and come when called with distractions such as other strange dogs around) Edited February 12, 2013 by espinay2
Diva
Espinay's knowledge is extensive, if you can get to Yass relatively easily I'd start there, and once the dog is old enough to be admitted to agility decide if you want pursue it - the closest club may be Belconnen Obedience in Mitchell ACT, depending on where you live. OMG! Ok. The receptionist I spoke to was the one who gave me the information when I rang. Can you pm or email me? I would like more information on the classes. Thanks! :)

Guest Roka
P.S. My husband was an instructor at CDC many years ago now (we moved from Canberra in 2001) He had German Shepherds and had an obedience champion named "Killi". I used to go with him to competition days and help set things up. I really loved going there. the grounds are very beautiful and there are so many beautiful dogs! I miss living in Canberra and sometimes wish we never moved away. We are close to retirement and simply cannot afford to move back there now. Guest Roka
I meant as a club to do these things with over the long run. Not just immediately, right now. I do realize how young my little Roka is (although he's growing like a weed!) As mentioned, the closest would be BDOC in Mitchell. Edited February 12, 2013 by espinay2
poochmad
Hi. I live in Goulburn and yes, they do have an obedience club here. I never took our dog/s because the training seemed a bit old fashioned - they still used choke chains and some of the methods I didn't agree with, i.e. yanking young puppies around. In saying that, when I was there to observe the dog showing group (which are very good), there was a new trainer who was slowly making changes for the better, instilling more 'modern' ways to train, i.e. flat collars, rewards, etc. Agility was also being provided but not loose leads as the training is done at the showgrounds and does not have the facilities to let dogs off lead. This was a couple of years ago now; it could be different now.
Guest Roka
Hi Poochmad! Hi. >I live in Goulburn and yes, they do have an obedience club here. Great! >I never took our dog/s because the training seemed a bit old fashioned - they still used choke chains and some of the methods I didn't agree with, i.e. yanking young puppies around. OH! That's not good to yank whittle puppies around! Would you mind if I asked you a few questions about Goulburn in general? I am curious about a few things as it is one of the towns I am considering moving to but know that these questions are not appropriate for this forum.
