I've recently switched to the ham lunch roll from woolies for his treats. He loves it. I don't think that's the only reason though :) we have been doing a lot of work also. Plus he is still growing up....

My next goal is to reduce the amount of treats he gets for training, both instructors at the 2 different places we go have said I give him to much! :) He has to do what I ask the first time.

Don't cut back too suddenly though - if you get too stingy with your treats now you might lose the progress you've made.

I would suggest you cut back to intermittent treats on the exercises he already knows well and does almost without thinking. But keep the reinforcement rate high for the stuff he's still learning.

You want him to experience as much success as possible, and keep his enthusiasm for work high.

Another brag tonight!! :D

After just 1 night in class 2 we have been moved up to class 3!!

He has really turned a corner, while he is not perfect he is so much better then when I started this thread. During the class tonight he was doing really good and I was looking around thinking we don't really belong in this class but it will probably be a few weeks before we get to move, but then instructor came over at the end and said we did really well and to move up next week :D

So proud!

Just wanted to share again - proud of Book today. I had to take him to the specialist vet for a follow up visit. When we arrived there were a few people and dogs in the waiting room and we just sat down. The receptionist commented that he was a very well behaved staffy. When it was our appointment we had to walk through the middle of 2 SWF's (one that had been barking at Book which he ignored) - he just walked through with me and didn't pay any notice to them. And the vet also commented and said wow he did well walking through the middle, what a good dog :D

It's nice to have positive comments for a change....I've been getting a bit upset/frustrated at obedience training with some of the comments other owners have said under their breath. Book has been really good. Not carrying on - not so much as even glancing at some of the dogs and they make out like he is going to eat them! One lady with her toy poodle actually said to her dog, don't speak to him, he will eat your for dinner! I wanted to say something but I kept calm instead and just showed through the class how good Book is. One other dog when we were doing recalls ran most of the way down the line (offlead) but then stopped at Book and was eyeing him and growling him so I stepped in front to block this dog from getting to Book (who was onlead) before the owner put it back on lead. Booker didn't react to this dog at all - if anything he was taken back and not really sure what to do. And from now on every lesson the owner is talking to his dog about the 'staffy' and making excuses for it's behaviour because it's scared of the 'staffy'. My 'staffy' is called Booker and he has not such much as batted an eyelid at this dog! The instructer is really good though, he hears what is said by some and tells me not to worry...

ETA - and another time when we were doing drop stays - a dog broke and ran over to play with Book (I had his lead) and he just play bowed and wanted to run around with it - took the owner a bit to catch her dog - and they still looked at Book as if it was his fault. At least the instructor praised him for being a good boy :)

Anyway Rant over! :)

I walked past a guy with his off leash bully today (looked like a bull arab), a polite, responsive little teenager. He loped over to us and had a little circle and sniff with mine, but backed off immediately when his owner called him to move on. I have no idea why some people are so breed prejudiced, it's so utterly ignorant

I've seen a couple of your threads (because I'm looking for the same answers!), you must be so proud of Book's progress :)

Thanks Corie. I am very pleased. He is such an awesome dog.

Let me know how you go with yours :)

I know this thread is a bit old now but just wanted to share how proud I am of Booker.

We had obedience class tonight and for the first time ever with lots of other dogs in the class he was heeling, sitting, dropping, turning, etc. without a lead on. Only for about 3 mins at the end of the lesson but I am so proud of him - he didn't take his eyes off me :D

I am so happy with him

Excellent work. Hopefully your well trained staffy might do something to counter the prejudice against bull breeds that exists. Do keep us updated its lovely to hear good results, keeps us in the salt mines inspired.
