What Would You Do?

Ok so I am desperate to get Bonnie my 7 month old desexed ASAP but I have these 2 options:

a) Get her done next Friday at our regular vet, who costs $200, has done 5 of our dogs in the past, we've known them for 20 years, trust them implicitly and they are a great cost but it means putting Bon under GA for the 3rd time since December (she had surgery for 2 broken legs in January) and then she has to go under GA again in about 3 weeks time to get xrays done (although I can probably put this off a bit)

b) get her desexed when she goes under GA to have her legs x-rayed about 3 weeks. They have been repaired, she is running around on them already, there is no problems the Specialist wants an xray 8 weeks post op to check the pins/plates so he can desex her when she's under the GA. This is great, but I can imagine getting a specialist to desex is going to cost double probably triple what our family vet will cost but the benefit will be that she only has to go under GA one more time.

What would you do? She is only 2kgs, I just worry about her going under GA too much even though she recovers no problems, I do worry about it on her little system.

The reason I'm trying to beat the season is that there are 2 male dogs here (both desexed) but I have read that doesn't stop them trying and I really don't need to be dealing with randy males trying to mount after her 2 broken legs. They can really come into season anytime from 7 months on so i'm expecting it anytime soon.

HELP ME PLEASE!!

Get a quote from the specialist first - then come back! :)

I'd second that. You may find it's not as expensive as you think because you are already paying for a GA. I had Jenna spayed while she underwent another proceedure and it didn't cost that much more. Can't remember how much though, sorry.

Ideally if it were me, I'd have her done while she's under for ther x rays, even if it cost more. Unless obviously, you can't afford what they quote.

Can't hurt to find out what they would charge, it might not be a heap more considering she's already going to be under etc.

Ok, I'll get a quote today, I guess I was just expecting a $600 one but maybe I'll be suprised!

You might find that medication is expensive anyway. $200 is cheap for female desexing - does that include the fluids and pain relief etc? Could your regular vet do the xrays while she is under?

Poor little Bonnie - she is having a bad trot :(

I'd ask the specialist if it was ok for your regular vet to take the rads while she's there being desexed! They can easily send over the rads (or email immediately if they are digital) as long as your vet takes the required views :)

Yeah that's everything! They are good to us. When we took her in the day after she broke her legs from the emergency centre for a second opinion they didnt even charge us!

The xrays probably should be done by the specialist seeing as they did the surgery and have her bits on file.

Money isn't a huge issue buy if it's going to cost 3 times the amount it's aomething to consider

A lot of specialists won't do desexings so it may not even be an issue. :)

Obviously one anaesthetic would be better but I wouldn't stress if you have to get it done seperately.

Also, how old is she? With her history of broken bones it might be worth waiting to desex because hormones are very important for growth.

yes... there's bone healing/growth to consider....

I'd be hesitant to desex this dog until she was fully grown and fully healed.

Agree. I would be waiting.

This specialist actually mentioned that he would desex for me when she was under GA for her Xrays, I would never have thought to even ask them otherwise.

Good point about the bone healing. I will mention to him also, small dogs mature earlier though.

This topic can sway with different opinions and I've always maintained that I follow the advice of that of my vet. I was asking for opinions to if you'd get her done option a) or b) but now I have option c) to think about as well . The bone healing raises a good point and one I will raise with my Orthopedic Animal Specialist. She has the benefit of having her fractures surgically pinned and plated which forces the joining of bones and has allowed her to weight bear from 1 week post op. Unlike those of casts that rely on the cast to stabilise the bone to allow for healing.

I will definitely raise the idea of hormones and bone healing with the Associate Professor Philip Moses Small Animal Surgeon and trust his judgement implicitly :D. To be honest my initial fear was that of general anesthetic on a 2kg body so often. I've also never had a dog in season, she sleeps on my bed and is 100% inside, that would be a whole new concept to me but one I could deal with if in her best interest of course :)

I would not be at all surprised that what she has been through will delay the season thing anyway.

They come into season when THEY are ready - not when the calender tells them! :)

You could just wait and arrange to pop her down to your vet at the very first sign of season beginning - if it does before you are ready.. They will not de-sex during season, but if you catch the very early signs, it is not so bad.

Deserving in season carries more risks with excessive bleeding and I believe that is all.

I'd do the desex and X-rays at the same time. It might be a little more expensive but possibly it much so as it is only 1 pre med, 1 anaesthetic fee, 1 hospital fee etc.

I think Option B is proving to be the winner!

I'm waiting for a call back for a quote so probably won't get it until next week now.
