Jellyblush
Mita, Dr Carter is Roo's behaviourist. She is fantastic. Thank you for your support. Pebbles, it appears that of the four girls, there is one girl Roo has bonded with particularly and on this occasion she went out briefly. The basis of them having Roo was that someone is always there - not that this one girl is always there. Edited to add - this was only her fourth day there. Animal House
Oh, so she got separation anxiety because one of the girls went out? It's not looking like there are many options left, and you definitely haven't failed her, I think she was probably like this (or very prone to SA) from the get go but your ex was always home so it wouldn't have showed. mita
Mita, Dr Carter is Roo's behaviourist. She is fantastic. Thank you for your support. Thank goodness, then, that you have vet care in the mix. All the more reason why no one can say you've failed (& least of all, you!). OK, strategies that work with Roo haven't been found yet.... or everything humanly possible will have been tried. That's not failure. We had an elderly little dog, as I told you, where we came to the end of the road, nothing worked. I also think it's reasonable if you decide to get a second opinion (based on recommendations). A fresh eye could bring fresh insights. Edited February 5, 2013 by mita
pebbles
Oh dear, guess it's a bit difficult to tell the girl/s they can't go out! Roo seems to bond very deeply with certain people, needs to have 'one person' security. At least there appears to be a reason for her escaping, she's a smart girl! Thank goodness she made it home OK! Wish you all the luck in the world with her.
WoofnHoof
Been reading this thread but can't remember if its been mentioned before but I'm wondering how she would go in an old folks home? Not sure of the logistics maybe someone else knows?
HeelerLove
You definitly haven't failed her! You have done so much when many other people would have thrown in the towel long ago. Don't beat yourself up.
CollieChaos
I dont know whereabouts you live, but where I work, we offer a first day daycare at half price ($24), so you could try that and see how she goes and if it may be suitable for her long term? If she is friendly with other dogs she would be able to play with them, and if not, she could have a seperate area for playing, or stay in the safety of a room. At least then you would know she is safe and has someone watching over her :) (If you did want to bring her in on a regular basis, you could buy a 10 day pack for $380, working out at $38 per daycare used, and it has no expiry, and there are further packs available too). This is at The Pets Hotel in Port Melbourne :)

It was only her 4th day there - these things take time and from what you have said, the fact that she stayed there like she has is fantastic. Are the Uni girls still willing to work with you on this? If so, I wouldn't give up on that just yet - it may take some time and if they are willing to help, then hopefully it will. Do you take her toys, bedding etc when she goes over there? (to make it more like home) You have not failed her. In fact you have gone far and beyond what a lot of people would be prepared to do. I wish I lived closer, she would be an ideal day time playmate for my boy - he gets so lonely and bored and would love a buddy to hang with all day (and I work from home - if I am not here my 21 year old son is).. Wishing you lots of luck

Wishing you lots of luck Yes - the girls love her and still want her back. I've taken her bedding, a toy, an old t shirt of mine, some snacks for distraction, her own water bowl from home. They've set up a little 'safe corner' for her. I know these thing take time but now that she can escape from their place there's a welfare issue - they are on a busy road and she could very easily get hurt. aaaaaaagh. Thanks for all the support. Sheridan
Have they worked out how she escaped?
Jellyblush
Nope - but it was likely over their side gate. It is 2 metres but I've seen her jump that height to get to me before.
Sheridan
Nope - but it was likely over their side gate. It is 2 metres but I've seen her jump that height to get to me before. But is she otherwise inside? Perhaps if they take her outside they can keep her on lead.
Jellyblush
Yep... but the arrange already WAS to keep her inside unless outside for walking. I can only ask them, I can't be responsible for what they do when I'm not there. I don't know. I'm exhausted. Mentally, physically, financially. I don't know what the point of another behaviourist is. If they say pts, it's yet more money I don't have to tell me something I could have done anyway...if they recommend another program or meds, well, I have that now, my issue is that Roo can't be alone for one.single.second without it becoming a welfare issue, either self harming or escaping. What can anyone possibly do or say to help us now? I can't guarantee she'll NEVER be alone between now and several weeks away when meds have had a chance to work. I just can't. So what good will further opinions be? Sorry to sound so defeatist. I in no way mean to sound ungrateful for the great advice I am getting. I'm just wound up over emotional and so exhausted and despairing.

raineth
I really think this is taking a terrible toll on you, as it pull on anyone in the same situation. You are important too, and I can't help but wonder about your quality of life at the moment You need freedom and to be able to socialise, and you need to be financially stable and to not be under so much stress. I really think you have gone above and beyond with Roo, and your endurance and perseverance is really to be admired. Perhaps though it has got to the point where it is unendurable for both of you. No dog could have asked for more dedication from their owner than what you've given to Roo, but you really do have to look after yourself as well. persephone
I agree with others that she only be on lead outside the student's house in the meantime. Hmmm.. with there being absolutely no way to guarantee this .. is it worth the extra load of worry which Jelly will carry all day, wondering, and hoping??? Jelly has her own welfare to consider now - if she gets ill, what happens then ? It is such a stressful situation ..and Jelly, you have my thoughts and best wishes. Nekhbet
If you're free on a Saturday afternoon why don't you bring Roo down to my school and see how she goes. Another eye can't hurt and call it an Xmas present ;) Conversely if you know someone that does engineering or you can get a hold of a 'dog box' that goes on the back of a ute, I know it's mean but put her into one of those, just big enough for her to fit in if you have to leave her alone. She can't get enough leverage to hurt herself and if she's not crate trained already you should start.

Sheridan
Don't apologise, Jelly. This is very hard for you. If you're not busy on Saturday, go see Nekhbet. At this stage it can't hurt and sometimes an opinion of someone you're not paying can help.
Nekhbet
Come and hang out at last chance saloon  even if all you get is an afternoon of chatting with other people and running her over agility equipment/run around
