_PL_
I don't know much about it. Mum was a bit vague on detail, but she was at Top Ryde (?) and there is a new store, not open yet and but the sign on the front says they will be working with rescue. Or shelter pets, not sure which. Sounds like a nice idea if it will help rescue's exposure to more people. Anyone been there for a stickybeak? :) edit for spelling Edited January 15, 2013 by Powerlegs

gillbear
ATTENTION SYDNEY AND NSW ANIMAL RESCUE ORGANISATIONS:Bark Lane is looking to form partnerships with similar minded organisations who share the same goals in creating awareness of adopting rescue animals. In our new store, we will be providing the opportunity to cross promote the facility to adopt and adoptions will be directly from our store. We have a team of experienced and passionate people ready and waiting to start this challenge together. If you think you may be interested in forming a partnership with us, please contact us via private message on this page or please contact me directly. (Lucy Edmondston). Thank you xx

Horsegal98
Not a fan from the signage, looks like animals will be exposed to pet shop/ retail conditions
Sheridan
Don't agree with selling animals from pet shops whether they're sourced from BYBs, puppyfarms or rescue groups and I can't see any ethical rescue group agreeing to 'stock' it either. Let's not weasel word it. It's selling animals not adopting them out.

cryptic
I was approached by pm on Facebook by them. They wanted to form a partnership with my small rescue I declined. Has anyone else on here been contacted ? Yes dogs in shop all day with walks four times a day and go home with her or a foster carer at night.. They want to be responsible for the re-homing of the dog.

Not sure what is intended by Bark Lane or how they will do homechecks etc - hopefully they will come in and clarify.
Gertrude139
Seems just like what Animal Ark have been doing. They opened in VIC at the end of November, I was interested to see how if would work, not that I can visit as I am in Sydney. Animal Ark Pet Supplies Although in saying that is does seem quite similar to what the RSCPA are doing at their retail branches ( I think they call them care centres?) Still not sure how I feel about it, I can see pluses and minuses for both sides of the argument. It would be good if they could track the animals sold long term to see if the surrender/euth rates were any lower than from a normal pet store. _PL_
I just assumed they meant adoption days? adoptions will be directly from our store. ?? Sorry. I was picturing a situation with the carer there. Like the US. Pets are adopted 'directly' from the retail premises but with the rescue there doing the checking/applications. Then the store benefits by the add-on sales of the accessories. Not doing the actual rehoming themselves.
tdierikx
Not enough info anywhere public to allow one to make any real assessment as to whether this would be a goer or not... I'll wait until I see it operational before making up my mind here... T. Edited January 15, 2013 by tdierikx

I understand there are benefits through exposure etc but selling pets through pet shops doesn't sit well with me, regardless of where they're from. Loving my Oldies
Well, I'm not far from there, so will be taking a look when they open. Although I think it is best at this stage to keep an open mind, I think I am leaning towards what Sheridan is saying. Whatever their plans are, unless the Rescue group maintains full control over the selling of the animals, I wouldn't go along with it.
mita
AWL Q'ld has what they call AWL Q'ld Adoption Centres in a number of pet supply stores. All usual AWL adoption procedures & after-support are followed...same as adopting from their shelter. They've been doing this for a number of years now. I assume they would've been assessing extent of value for the pets over time. A pet supplies store near me had an AWL Adoption Centre which featured selected cats & dogs. A specially set up area housed no more than 2 dogs at a time with appropriate flooring, beds, toys etc. A waist-high transparent fence prevented the dogs being over-stimulated by people. No more than 3 cats at a time were housed in a roomy cat enclosure, made & supplied by a Q'ld company & equipped with cat hammocks, high walkways, climbing equipment and toys. That actually was educational... we got some of those items for our cat. Both staff & volunteers kept up the exercising, socialisation & stimulation. AWL staff kept calling in & their van was frequently there. In fact, I used to drop in donations for the AWL thrift shops. http://www.awlqld.com.au/adopt-a-pet/ It's how the basic concept is put into practice in a particular situation that counts IMO. If it can be demonstrated (& measured) that it benefits the dogs & cats, then it's fine with me. If it can't be, then it's not. Sheridan
Well, Bark Lane are acting if it's a new concept, though. Also, they have said that they will comply with the code of practice for how the animals will be housed but I assume places like Pets Purgatory comply with the code, too.
