Requirements Of Obedience Trials?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I was just after some info about obedience trials.

My BC is a bit young (and under trained) ATM, but I am hoping that she will be ready for her first trial by the end of the year. (She'll be 15 months by then). She's SUPER smart, so I think we can do it. Before I get my hopes too high, however, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what exercises are usually involved in the 1st grade of obedience trialling?

I'm taking her to our local obedience club in February, but I would like to get some more training done with her before then.

Thanks! :-)

Hi Rilla-My-Rilla here is the site for ANKC http://www.ankc.org.au/Rules.aspx , go down the Obedience & download the pdf, your 1st class will be CCD (Community Companion Dog) it has all the details there

Any thing that is confusing just ask :D

Not sure where you are RMR - but assuming you are in Queensland as it says, you should probably have a look at the Dogs Queensland website. If you're not already a member of Dogs Queensland, You will need to join, and make sure Rilla is registered in your name (youi've probably already done this :-)).

The Dogs Q website will show you the various affiliated clubs, and the show and trial calendar for the year.

If you're a member of a club, I would be offering to help out at one or more of their trials - best way of learning how things tick, without the pressure of your first competition. Enjoy!

Thanks Tassie! I'll go and check it out - I might ask our dog training club when the first trial is for the year too, so I can check it out.

The thing I'm realising more and more at the moment is you need a really good connection and focus. Kenz and I have a good connection but not the focus, so until I have that I'm going to work on other things (that will help build the focus!). I have found RallyO to be a great way to ease in to trialling and obedience as well.

Thanks everyone for all of your help!

I just had another question...what exactly is "vetting"? :o Sorry if this seems silly!

Vetting is when the bitches are swiped to make sure they are not in season :D & no it is not a silly question :D

Like I said earlier RMR got a question, even if it sounds silly to you Please ask any one here would be able to answer/ advise you :)

No silly questions here :-). At the most basic level, it's checking to make sure bitches on the trial ground are not in season. Back in the day, some clubs would actually want to see all dogs, dogs and bitches but now it's usually only botched ..and some clubs will swab all bitches, while others will check for deserving tattoos and only swab entire bitches. You line up to have your bitch checked before the trial proper starts, then your number card is stamped to show you're ok to go in the ring.

If your bitch has been desexed there is no vetting required (in Qld) :)
