My staffy is staying overnight at the vet tonight because she is dehydrated even thought she is drinking excessively at the moment,

I pick her up in the morning but she has to go back on Friday and stay overnight so they can do a fluid deprivation test. To see if she has this insipidus.

Does anyone else's dog have this. Has it changed your dogs life are they on any medication.

She is 7

I had a dog with diabetes.

I got her at 10 and she lived until 14.5.She became diabetic a short time after she came to me.

She had insulin twice a day and we had to watch her weight and diet.Of course she then had problems with cataracts, and I had one eye done to remove the cataract.

She had regular glucose tests to keep an eye on her levels.

We were able to keep her going well, and it just becomes a routine after a while...just something you have to do each day.

She had to be put to sleep on 22January 2011,after a massive seizure where she became blind and totally lost, there was nothing they could do for her .She had displayed symptoms of either dementia or a brain tumour for 2 months prior to her passing and the specialist thought she most likely had dementia, but the seizure indicated probably a brian tumour.

I thought I wouldnt be able to give the injections, but I had no choice as my husband came home from work too late to do it, so I just had to bite the bullet to do it.

We loved her dearly and miss her terribly.

I had a border collie with nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (where the kidneys don't recognise the hormone for urine concentration)who was diagnosed at about 8. He was never put on any medication.

The important thing with this disease is that they can't concentrate their urine so can dehydrate very very quickly. I had water bowls everywhere so he always had access to water. Because they also pee more frequently he always has access to go outside for toileting, so he never had accidents inside. He lived to 13.

HarperLee on this forum has a dog with DI. I believe her dog Kisho is on constant medication. Send her a PM and I am sure she would be happy to tell you her experiences.

One of my bitches as diagnosed with it and she was PTS. She was dying of organ failure due to the diabetes. It came on very quickly and she was diagnosed and gone within the week.

Medication can control the illness, it's the kidney failure (if it occurs ) that results in death.

ETA: my bitch was going through 5 plus litres of water a day and was urinating in her sleep, it was horrible to watch

My old Emma had diabetes. But she had mellitus. From all my research and what I discussed with my vet insipidus is a bit more difficult to manage.

If you want to know anything about the management of my old girls diabetes PM me because I can talk about it for hours!!!! The most important thing was your life is no longer your own, you are ruled by the clock in terms of feeding and medication schedules, that was a bit hard to adjus to but I found it managable until she died. She lived for 18 months after diagnosis, and it was kidney faliure that got her in the end.

I have a 5 1/2 year old Labrador that suffers with Central Diabetes Insipidus and have sent you a private message.
