If You Are Not With Your Dogs

Sway's vet waiting room thread got me thinking.

If I am on my own and someone walks past with a friendly dog that tries to say hello - I often ask if I can say hi and pat it..

It is all dogs. OK probably more oldies (they just melt my heart)..

I was at the vets a few weeks ago to pick up worming stuff and didn't have Zig with me. There were 2 really old little mutts in there. The look on their little faces when I walked in the door and the fact that they both stood up as soon as the door opened, I just had to ask to say hi and could I have a pat..

I did and they were lovely..

Do you say hi to random dogs?

yep i do as well.. always ask if it is OK to meet and greet.. just cannotresist

I always say hello to dogs that I walk past. And may even say something nice about the dog to the owner.

Especially if they are Tibbies

You'd be proud of me, DD. All dogs get a 'Hello!' from me. Today I walked past a young man with 2 hugely happy bully type dogs at his feet & holding a baby Shih Tzu. I said 'Hello, happy guys!' to the bully types & told the young man his little one is gorgeous.

oh yes!

especially if we are on holidays overseas...i get so nanasick for the animals...by the end of the trip im salivating

of course it depends on the situation...i wont cross a road or risk life and limb or interrupt someone..and i also stop short of chasing after joggers :)

but i do try to strike up a conversation with someone who has a cute or unusual dog...puppymelt moments...that kind of thing

i missed the animals once so much in norway that i bought a carved wooden bunny and had it up on the dashboard of the rental

in nz recently i found myself stroking the stuffed kiwi i bought for the kids

I have been O/S a fair bit lately and missing my dogs dreadfully. I often ask if I can pat a dog and/or take a photo - even with a language barrier it's always a conversation starter....even if the only words I know are "super hund!!!" and "bier" Last trip, my blog was filled with photos of beautiful dogs and I made a few new friends through them too. The highlights were a Dutch Partridge Hound in Vienna, a stunning young Leonberger in Salzburg and a Dalmatian (and his owners) in Paris.

Here's a little friend I made yesterday in Los Angeles waiting for his flight...

I would need to say hi to this guy!

I had an 18 year old nearly blind and completely deaf schipperke come into work yesterday. I fussed over him, asked if I could give him a treat (which he scoffed down  ). Lovely little gentleman . Love the oldies.

I think it is because I miss Ollie so much still. Poor little old man, he was such a sweetheart..

Not really... Unless I'm on the beach and it's early in the morning, and they're the only ones around, and they have a beautful dog like the Newfy who came up to me the other day

  • 8 months later...

I had to resurrect this thread because of an experience this afternoon. I met the biggest beautifulest cuddly friendly cream dog. His breed? Akita :thumbsup: .

A few weeks ago, I'd seen him from a distance and at first could really just make out the largest dog I'd seen in the neighbourhood, but on watching for a while, I was fairly certain he was an Akita. I was in the front yard this afternoon and he and his family were walking past; they stopped to talk and to give me cuddles - with the dog that is :D . OMG, he is so big and it made me realise that I'd not seen an Akita in the flesh and had no idea they were so big.

Since working with dogs all day every day, the novelty has worn off a bit, but if there's a breed I don't see often I will go out of my way ask if I can interact with it.

There are some breeds I can't get enough of and I will seek those out as well.

Prior to working in the animal industry I used to say hi to every dog I came in contact with and give them a pet.

Just read this thread too...I'm guilty of accosting other people's dogs.

I was a shocker when I was in Melbourne with my son a couple of weeks ago. I was missing my Woger dreadfully and there were so many lovely Staffords at the Rugby that I couldn't help but fondle a few! Luckily their owners were very friendly and well-socialised and they didn't mind at all!

I pretty much notice and want to touch every dog I meet but always ask first. We've had quite a few doggy events recently with Peiradise and I come home covered head to toe in dog slag! So many gorgeous dogs and different breeds to feel and smooch! This afternoon on my way home from the Gold Coast Pet Expo I was a bit shaky hungry so I pulled off to get something to eat. I took a look at my hands and realised they were filthy. I ate anyway!

If a dog approaches me and its friendly then I'll pat it but I wouldn't approach a dog that didn't make an approach to me. That said years ago I was taking photos at the SA Agility at west beach and I was checking a board for something between the morning and afternoon events and this dog just shoved itself under my arm so I patted him. Owner was delighted when she turned around and was partly in shock that he was happily being patted. Apparently this particular dog was usually very shy and didn't like being approached and patted by strangers - the difference I think was that I had my back to him and didn't realise the dog was there (owner had two or three and was looking the other way and just happened to be behind me with dogs). LIttle Shetland sheepdog and he must have been a bit cat like in personality (cats tend to always approach people in a home that don't like cats as apparently they tend to ignore the cat and are therefore considered by the cat as less threatening than a stranger who is actively calling the cat). It was when Port Power won the grand final so many years ago now. Owner was like saying it was completely unknown for the dog to look for attention and Im like he shoved his head under my arm so I patted him.
