pebbles
Do these weight control dry foods work? Would someone be able to let me know a good brand, where's best to get on line. Will only be needed a small bag to start. Thanks for any help.
WreckitWhippet
I like the Canidea Platinum formula it's 20% protein and 8.5% fat. Sometimes I think you are just better off with a super premium normal dry and padding it out with some grated carrot and veg
Sandra777
AFAIK most of the "weight control" dry foods involve adding bulk and reducing everything else and upping the price. I would agree with Pav Lova - use a food with a good protein % and lowish fat % and add your own bulk. I like ordinary cooking bran (not breakfast bran), mixed with something the dog likes (mine would eat it soaked in plain water LOL). Adds lots and lots of bulk & fills them up, but it definitely does create elephant poos!
sheena
I've fed Black Hawk Lamb to my two BC's now for nearly two years & they have both maintained a really good weight on it. I did recently buy a 6.7kg bag of Earthborn Coastal Catch for a change of taste & just fed it to the girl, not sure if it were low fat or not, but she lost 2 kilos by the time she had finished the 6.7 kilos & I was feeding her 25% more of it But I agree with Pav. best way to lose weight is to give a really good kibble, but cut down the quantity & use a filler like carrot, pumpkin or sweet potato & watch those treats. RiverStar-Aura
I use the Royal Canin Light on my cat and she's dropped from 5.8 kilos to a lovely 4.6 kilos and kept the weight off. Cats are a bit harder to diet IMO thought! I'd just be looking at using fillers in the dog food rather than going to the Light option: grated carrot, pumpkin even boiled white rice. Gretel
Yes I'd agree with the others. I have a girl staying with me whose owner has been feeding her weight control kibble for 6 months without the poor girl losing a thing. Mind you I have no doubt she has been fed lots of other non diet stuff (and plenty of it ). I've had her just over 2 weeks and got 2 kilos off feeding her a very tiny amount of normal dry food for breakfast. Just about 6 pieces to make me feel better cause I give her something when the others eat. And then for tea she has pumpkin and a chicken neck. Not a long term solution but she was in pain with a back problem so needs the weight off. She is moving so much better and is smiling again :) We still have quite a way to go yet. Sandra777
Just another thought - ages ago I had a really obese Lab in the boarding kennels. Every meal time I'd take her out into a run and throw each piece of dry food individually for her to find and eat. Took a little while, but got the dog walking (trotting in the end). She'd do it for pieces of carrot or apple too. Figured that the amount of calories she was getting out of the dry food was probably not too much more than the energy she used getting it
westiemum
Had a lot of success with a raw diet for weight loss with my oldest Westie. Meat and veg. Worked well for us and he wasn't tooooo hungry! :)
