Here is a picture of my Amstaff he has had this rash since 2 weeks before xmas, now he got a shot of cortizone ( something I really didnt wanna give him) and he was on a course of tablets 2 a day for 10 days, now this has only just started as today is a sunday and vets aren't open does anyone know what I can do for him or what it is as the vets couldn't work out what it is, his diet hasn't changed he is on chicken mince rice and vegies, is this fleas or something in the grass as we have been here for a yr already and this has never happened before and it has only really started since summer and the heat started here in Newcastle, NSW

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ive just put an antiseptic cream on him, he is army crawling it through the house I feel so helpless my poor baby is itchy

Ouch :( My boy had a similar reaction last year, but not quite so bad... His turned out to be grass allergies, and we're battling them again this year, but slightly worse as the allergy spread to his ears and we had a lot of problems for a few weeks.

We have to keep him inside during the day while we're at work, or else he'll drag himself around on the grass and end up with a red inflamed stomach and make his armpits bleed. We left him out on Christmas day because we were leavinh early and coming home late, and ever since he's gone backwards again. We've also got him on a sensitive skin dry food as well. If you have any phenergen, he could have half/one of those depending on his size, you get it from the chemist behind the counter, so it could be an option for today until you can book him into the vet.. I find it works really well to ease the intial itchiness if there's nothing else on hand. We bath Bundy in Aloveen shampoo on a regular basis, and Aloveen conditioner is rubbed directly onto his armpits and stomach, this takes the heat out and helps him relax and stops him trying to scratch. Our vet seems to think that they can get worse over time, as we had no problems the first year, and now we've had issues for 2 years in a row.If possible try and stop him crawling through the house, it'll only make it worse :(

Keep him off the grass and put a t-shirt on him to stop him scratching.

Neocort would take the itch away but if you don't have any of that, you could try plain old calamine lotion or pinetarsal, which you can get from the chemist

Yea got a bintang shirt and also got pinetarsal too, with that should I just dab it on his skin or give him a soak in it?

No worries, a little common sense on days when the vets are closed can go a long way.

I'm just imagining that he's feels very hot, quite stressed and very much in need of some relief.

The other thing that you could try is an antihistamine. There's plenty of threads on here that offer advice and dosage rates. It would be well worthf a try if it's a contact allergy of some kind.

Definitely a cool rinse..and an antihistamine ..and a vet visit tomorrow . Unfortunately, when they army crawl etc , they can open th eskin and let in bacteria..infection may then follow and things get nasty :(

It looks much like a contact allergy.

Look up wandering jew/dew..it's a garden plant to which many dogs react.

Think about what you have used on your carpet /when washing his bedding /sprayed on the garden . Are there bark chips , or different grasses?

Allergies are such a difficult darn thing :(

Oh, and , please, always CHECK INGREDIENTS in human medications before using them ON or IN dogs .While a lot of medicines can be used safely .. an awful lot can not ..so please check , either here or with a vet or on Google for individual ingredients .......

Have already been to the vets and Im gonna sound selfish but I am paying over $180 for every trip cant afford that I dont use anything on his bedding I havent changed anything im thinking its something from the grass as he is constantly laying in the grass, we dont have any wandering Jew in our back garden as we dont have a garden in our backyard at all its all just grass and apparently 3 diff types...... Thanks Pav lova :)

My boy is about 27kg and I give him 1 polarmine tablet and that seems to help.

I also have a clam shell pool full of water and he will climb into it if he is itchy but ours seems to have settled since we started using revolution for fleas and heartworm.. It also treats some mites or something the vet said.. He only had one dose and it seemed to work in a day or two.

Hope you work it out for him, poor boy.

A wash with Calendula Tea. Don't rinse off - leave on. Apply as and as often as necessary. Results should be fairly quick. Soothes the skin from itchiness and irritation. Doesn't cure whatever is the cause of the problem, but eases the discomfort for the dog and buys some time whilst you're finding out what the root of the problem is.

calendula tea is really beneficial; really calming and soothing. about 4 tbsn [in the foot of a nylon stocking] steeped in a litre of boiling water and allow it to cool to a comfortable temperature [fridge/freezer to speed that up] but for your boy i'd go about 4 cups of tea in a bucket [by the looks of him, i can just feel he'd appreciate that] --- if you don't have any, get some at your earliest possible opportunity. in the meantime, run cool water over him and gently swish it thru the coat, patting it on his chest and his belly. this will cool him down at least --- he'd be under an amount of stress and that will increase his temperature. get some organic coconut oil [woolies has it for about $6 a jar: 375ml i think]; 'massage' it over his entire body and start adding it to his meals [i've only recently begun to admire the benefits of coconut oil realising results within 2 weeks of use].

if you use OTC antihistamines, be aware of any contraindications as to how it metabolises with whatever drug/s his vet has prescribed --- all i'm saying is be careful.

do your best to figure out what it is your dog is reacting to and have it dealt with --- i've heard [read] that dogs do develop alergy/skin issues in the 2nd year of their life; your vet should advise in that regard.

the very best of good luck simmy :)
