superminty
Hi all, Posting this here as more people will see it. I have a friend in Adelaide who is looking to adopt an older Labrador Retriever. They're after an older dog - between 2 and 4 years perhaps - not a puppy, but not something too old either. It's an active home, with someone home most of the time. Does anyone have any suggestions of where to start looking? I was thinking breed rescue or contacting the state breed club, but thought I'd ask for recommendations here first. Melbourne dogs would be a possibilty too as my friend's sister lives here and is happy to take the dog across, and of course then I'd be able to help her choose the right dog. Thanks in advance. tdierikx
I wouldn't discount some of the "older" Labs either... my 7 year old still plays like she's 12 months old... crazy dog... *grin* T.
Her Majesty Dogmad
Have you checked out the list of Breeders via the DOL home page? I'm sure there must be some in SA.

dancinbcs
Ring around some of the more prominent and therefore larger show kennels. Most run on dogs for show and then place some as they sort out what they want to keep after they have shown them for a while. Young adult Labs are very popular so it is common for Lab breeders to do this. Ex show dogs have the added benefit of being well trained and socialised. Also try the breed clubs. They might let you advertise in their newsletter.

This is where I got my Millie from 4 years ago as a 2 year old. Had her flown from Canberra to Perth no worries. Salukifan
I would think Petrescue could be a good place to look. http://www.petrescue.com.au/ http://www.petrescue...ue_directory/SA Until such time as Pet Rescue allows you to search by breed, I'd say it's a very frustrating place to start. I simply don't get that policy at all.

There are breed specific rescues and enough purebreds to warrant that AND enough breeds used in descriptions too

MarieEvans
You can go to a dog breeder or a lab rescue. Or maybe someone here has a lab that they're putting up for sale. :D
tdierikx
(the following is a joke) Maybe they'd like my 7 year old Lab - her name is Trouble for a reason... lol! T.
superminty
Thanks everyone for their recommendations. I did a bit of googling and was completely overwhelmed by the choice! So thought I'd go with organisations people have had good experiences with. Any more personal recommendations welcome. Also giggling at tdierikx offering their own dog - I have made similar comments many times when people are looking for a kelpie  Edited December 14, 2012 by superminty
Guest Labradork
Have you tried the Labrador Retriever Club of Victoria? http://www.labvic.org.au/rescue.html eta I forgot to add... I think their rescue person is (or was) the president of the National Labrador Retriever Council, so they might have contacts in SA. rubiton
Wow you found lots of options? Im in SA and was lookingfor a lab or lab x about 2 years or thereabouts. Absolutely zilch that could be found in SA (since it had to meet our dog). Lab rescue - filled out their form and stillhavent heard back nerly 2 years later. Tried contacting the lab breed society was told basically 'dont know of any so just check the newspaper for ads' at the time. We did eventually find an apparent nearly 2yo lab via pet rescue a few months back (he still acts as if he is younger) but it wasnt an easy task finding an older lab or lab x in Adelaide.
