Teeth Scale And Clean

My mini poodle is 11 and needs his teeth scaled and cleaned under anaesthetic, according to vet.

They also suggested Hills TD food afterward.

Quoted $550, Canberra.

Was a younger vet doing vaccinations.

Is that about normal? 7.5kg dog.

My hard to sedate 55kg boy was only about $250 ... but that was a number of years ago.

For many places that would be cheap,for our vet that is expensive .

As to feeding Hills thats your choice but i wouldn't bother.

We get all our oldies teeth done at 10yrs

I'd ring around for prices. Does it include pre-op bloods and fluids? Can't speak to the T/D.

which vet was this- PM if you like? I know of one in canberra that is VERY expensive. I've no doubt their quality of care is pretty good, however I do believe the prices can be a bit excessive.

$550 for a scale and polish (no extractions) in a small dog sounds a little pricey to me.

Also check and see if bloods and fluids are included.

I'd be tempted to ring around but also consider that some prices include bloods and fluids and some don't. For an 11 year old dog I would suggest fluids at a minimum, as it helps with organ perfusion and makes for a nicer recovery.

If you're happy with the level of care you receive at your current vet, perhaps it would be better to stick with them as they will know your pet best.

Hills T/D is ok, but there are plenty of other options for dental care out there. Does your dog get bones and other chewies regularly? There are also plaque removers available and brushing his teeth is also an option.

Personally i'm not a huge fan of T/D- its quite fatty and oily and some dogs have difficulty with the larger biscuits, especially if the are sore after a dental.

I prefer Royal Canin dental if I were to use a dental food.

Depends on what is included.

Charged as a standard GA with fluids and pre-anaesthetic blood tests, it could come to that.

We have a 'discounted' set of charges for dentistry that has a lower base price but even that with a blood test and a set of full mouth rads (if required) would be about $480 and any extractions and subsequent medications would be additional.

I'm in Melbourne and there is no way I would pay that amount if it is just a clean with no extractions or bloods especially when many vets get the nurses to do it and they just check it over.

The vet I used to work at charges somewhere between 400-500.

My 13 year old cat had his teeth done about 3 weeks ago, he had bloods but no extractions, he weighs 6kg and it was around $240 I would have been happy to pay up to $350

I paid $280 in Hervey Bay QLD 2 weeks ago for Brembo to have a scale and clean under GA, no bloods taken, no fluids given.

He is a 6 year old, 33kg mutt.

I was quoted $350-400 for a scale and clean or between $500-800 with extractions if needed plus pain meds and antibiotics.

Luckily it was really straight forward and no extractions were needed. He just needed them cleaned and I now brush them every second day :)

My dog is 7 yrs old now and had a scale and clean once when he was around 3yrs old as part of his surgery at the time. The vet recommended Hills T/D and whilst it's expensive it does help. Yes it's fatty so I adjusted his diet to accommodate the extra fat and the kibble is supposed to be large so it cleans the teeth. As others have suggested there are alternatives such as bones, brushing the teeth or Petzlife gel. I used Plaque off and Aquadent but I didn't find they made any difference and stopped using them.

Thanks for the advice. Seemed a bit expensive to me, so I'll ring around.

Was Gungahlin Vet (north Canberra). Only use them as local and didn't know any vets when we moved here.

Oscar has only been to the vet for vaccinations in recent years, so am happy for any decent vet to clean his teeth.

eta: OMG, the quotes just get worse at $600-ish for no extractions.

He's 11, so needs bloods, too.

You can't go wrong with Hamish at West Queanbeyan. It's a little out of your way, though. Some people recommend the vet at Hall, which is closer to you.

My 11 year old border terrier (8kgs) had his teeth scaled and cleaned, and two extractions, earlier this week. It cost $390ish and included fluids (but not bloods).

TD is useless with my two dogs. They swallow the pieces whole regardless of how big they are :laugh:

I prefer using chicken/turkey wings.

If your dog has other health conditions that would also bump up the price.

My dog has terrible teeth due to genetics and could easily have a dental every 6 months. His vet would like him to be on Hills TD but it doesn't seem to agree with the rest of his body, particularly his digestive system. He is good on Advance Dental, though this does not have the same scientific backing as Hills TD, which is not to say that it doesn't help but that there just hasn't been a clinical trial of it. Some people will tell you that both of these brands are rubbish but it really depends on what works best for your dog; apart from his teeth, vets rave about the condition that my boy is in. So I say give Hills TD a go, and see how your dog fares.

NB, my dog also gets greenies, has Plaque Off and I brush his teeth. He gets the odd bone, but they make him constipated and he tends inhale them instead of chewing! Do persevere with teeth brushing if you are up to it. It takes time and lots of patience but it's worth it. A dental specialist told me that toothbrushes for babies are best as they are softer than the ones from the pet store or vet, but do not use human toothpaste as it is poisonous.

wow aussie vets are expensive! I paid under £150 for a spey, dental and 10 extractions (yes that figure shocked me!) and that includes fluids and meds.

It was suggested to me many years ago to have my then 9 y/o Border Collie to have her teeth cleaned before she got any older. I chose not to go there & started feeding her chicken legs & wings about 5 times a week. When I took her back the next year they said how good her teeth were for her age.
