Ok.. Just curious as to when & why dogs are fed ? (thanks, nekh, for the idea)

I was always taught to feed dogs at the end of a day's activity , as this is similar to what happens with most predators ..they hunt, kill, eat ,then rest to digest.

yes, a snack in the morning if extra energy may be needed .. but main meal at the end of a day , always.

I would be interested to read your experience?

Wild dogs are crepuscular, so they are most active at dawn and dusk. A lot of their diet isn't large kills, but (in Australia) rodents, lizards, birds, rabbits, even grasshoppers.

So I would say eating morning and night is fairly normal :)

Mine get brekky and dinner - no real theory behind it except they would make my life hell if they didn't get brekky. Being pugs they are starving 24/7, but also they are young and still growing so morning they get a homemade raw mix, and night time is chicken carcass.

Mine get fed after their morning walk and after their evening walk.

But once my pup is over 1 year and my underweight one is at a healthy weight this may be cutdown to evening only, not sure what I want to do yet. If I did this though I would probably leave the bob-a-lot or wobbler out for them during the day with some kibble in it anyway

I feed mine twice a day too only the other way around. They get the RMB in the morning and the meaty part in the evening.

Mornings

It used to be nights but Atlas would end up having to go to the toilet in the middle of the night, so i moved it to mornings and never had the issue again!

Also easier for me in winter (and them) as everyone just wants to come inside into the warm, not sit outside eating!

Mine is purely a time thing - Boston takes forever to eat his carcass, he loves to suck it and drag it around the floor and I don't have that kind of time in the morning to indulge him

I feed 3 times a day because of Amber. The optimal meal schedule for her is actual 6 meals but I thought that was over the top a bit.

Feeding Poppy the same amount of food but over 3 meals stacked the weight on her. So if you are having trouble with weight gain this would be a good thing to try.

Prior to that I had been feeding 2 times a day. I seem to remember feeding once a day years and years ago. Changed to two because I had lots of young dogs for a couple of years.

My two are fed equal amounts morning and night - times are dependent on what we're doing. I always try to give a meal at least half an hour - usually more - after vigorous exercise, and at least one hour (preferably more) before something like agility trialling. No particular reason, except that it fits in with our routine, and they seem to settle well. Although my breed are not particularly prone to bloat, it can happen, so I feel more comfortable if they have smaller amounts in their stomach - and also - that's the reason for the big separation between exercise and feeding.

I feed our hounds late in the evening, for a few reasons. Ours eat raw (and not everyone eats their dinner quickly) so we don't want food sitting out while it's warmer. During the day there's also flies and birds so it's just better for us to feed them after dark.

They also seem more interested in food then anyway and tend to sleep better overnight if they have a full tummy.

The pup gets two meals a day (and likely will for a while as he needs twice daily medication) but the adults do very well on just the one.

Ours have a smallish brekky - one or two chicken wings, depending upon what they are doing that day, level of current activity, weight etc. Just enough for morning energy and to keep tummy grumbles and stomach acids down.

Main meal at night between 5-7pm

I don't really fit into your poll, because it depends on the dog.

I usually feed the biggr meal in the morning and some have a bit of a snack before bed.

The Greys are fed twice a day but the evening meal is the bigger of the two.

Pups are fed twice.

One bitch is fed at night and she grazes all night, she gets a piece of chicken or a bowl of mince in the morning. It's how she likes to eat and it's fine by me.

My dogs are the first thing I do when I get out of bed at 5.30 and they have always had breakfast by 6.30am.

Dinner and evening snacks are whenever I get to it

I only give them a wing for brekky, a dog biscuit after the morning walk, and then their big meal at night after evening walk.

Similar.

Mine have a chicken wing or a drumstick in the morning.

At night they have a proper meal.

Weekends they get a bone, red meat offcuts or a chicken carcass.

Same, Zig gets his chook carcass in the morning and roo meat at night..
