Select Committee On Dogs & Cats In Sa

There is a notification in todays Advertiser in Public Notices advising of this committee which has been established by The House Of Assembly Of The Parliament Of South Australia.

It lists various issues they wish to address & asks for submissions re companion cats & dogs

My slow computer will take too long to go to their website to find out more info.

Does anyone know who this committee are ? How they were selected What they intend to do ?

Hope there is no intention to follow Victoria's lead & implement their regulations here ?

I think its important that we know quite clearly what is going on beforehand, as opposed to after when they may have done whatever. The whatever may be something no one wants.

Everone in SA who has an interest in the outcome should take the time to make a submission or lobby their peak bodies to do so.

Dogs SA certainly should. It is too clumsy to cut and paste on this phone, but the terms of reference, members and submission deadlines will be on the SA parliament website. Members of the committee will all be members of the house that established the committee, with representation drawn from across the parties.

Once the report is made, you can still lobby govt to accept them or not, not all commiittee recommendations end up implemented.

would strongly urge everyone to have a say - Deathrow Pets, Animals Australia, Oscars Law pages on FB are all urging their own followers to bombard these people with their own views on how things should be done - unless you want AR driven legislation, like we are getting here in Vic, SPEAK UP NOW!!!

I agree regarding regulation of breeders can be a bit much. That's why, in section "f", I plan to put forward plans to reduce shelter euthanasia by actually directing legislation towards shelters.

I will argue:

  • Hayden's Law - which requires animals to be held in shelters for longer periods for reclaims, and requires shelters to be open at 'non-work' hours to allow reclaims.
  • Oreo's Law - that any animal that has a rescue group or home to go to cannot be euthanised.
  • requiring shelters to list all impounded animals (surrendered and strays) onto a central database so that people who have lost their dogs are more likely to be reunited.

Are any of the members of the committee involved with animals in any way ?

Will Dogs SA let us know if & how they respond to this ?

Are there actually any accurate stats or info on what percent of the cats & dogs in the pound come from registered breeders & have a pedigree ?

What percent are actually a pure breed & not a guess, it looks like a labrador or whatever.

Some of the dogs advertised from pounds as a breed don't look like they are that breed.

Like the way you are both thinking Reverend Jo & Leema.

It seems they are looking for a research officer - see info online here:

http://www.parliament.sa.gov.au/Resources/EmploymentOpportunities/House%20of%20Assembly/Advertisement%20-%20Research%20Officer.pdf

That would be an interesting role for the right person

It would be so good if one of the registered dog breeders could get this position.

May put some common sense into the whole matter. More rules that don't work are the last thing we need.

On the list of the Committee is Dr. Duncan McFetridge, his profession before going into Parliament was a Veterinarian, had his own clinic on Chandlers Hill Road Happy Valley, only used hime once hmmmmmmm

Dr Bob Such is my member for state so will go and whisper in his ear, in writing of course.

Thanks so much for linking this, Zug Zug.

Bob Such put a bill to parliament basically aiming to eliminate 'puppy farms', but it lacked substance. The Select Committee was formed in response to this bill, to make something with more oomph.
