Leema
Despite quite a bit of Googling, I can't precisely answer the question: How many puppies are sold in pet shops each year? Any help appreciated.

Her Majesty Dogmad
Way too many - shouldn't be any sold in petshops, they are a scourge. PAWS are just about to take another two ex-petshop dogs aged 18 months, owners going on holidays for Christmas ...
Jed
I worked this out about 5 years ago, by working out how many pet shops there were, and phoning around to see how many pups some had, and x it out. I have absolutely no idea what the final figure was . .. but it was a lot. 10s of thousands? I posted it here at the time, but I imagine it has gone now. Of course my notes have gone. Simply Grand
I doubt any official figures are kept, I can't think of any central body that would collect the info?? I suppose how Jed did it would be the only real way to get an idea... It would be sooo interesting to know numbers and where and why they vary. If microchipping requirements were consistent nationally and (big and) people all actually followed the requirements stats could probably be put together that way but can't see that happening anytime soon Edited December 7, 2012 by Simply Grand
Leema
Just stats for PIAA would be good if they existed.
Christina
There is absolutely no way of getting an exact or even realistic figure. Some will go through the books, some will be cash deals & some will not be sold. Just disposed of if no one wants to buy
Her Majesty Dogmad
And I can dispel the theory that all petshops follow regulations and chip the puppies when sold, they definitely don't. they regularly sell crossbreeds as purebreds (I've just found another example of this) to those who don't know any better.
