Sheridan
A day of rain and then dry weather has turned my yard in a week into a mass of grass seeds. I was planning on mowing, of course, but that will just allow them to seed, and worse, get into the doggy paws, etc. Plus an awful wind the other day, spread the dry ones everywhere? Has anyone found any solutions to getting rid of the bastard things?
mixeduppup
The only solution I know of is to put non seeding turf down, like buffalo grass or sir walter. We're dealing with those clover burrs and grass seeds at the moment. A dog came into the vet the other day with 6 in one ear and 2 in the other. Perhaps keep them in during seeding time (as much as you can anyway) Edited December 6, 2012 by mixeduppup
Bjelkier
If you do let me know, I'm in exact;y the same position. I'm pulling them out of the Samoyeds feet every night.
julesluvscavs
tell me about them arghhhh TLC will probably see this post and say about her recent Grass seed incident with one of her dogs today... I hate them with a passion (grass seeds), the cavs, and one of our cats has had to have a few over the years removed from ears and other areas (in the cats case) at the vets.. I have small area out the back we have temp fenced area off from the big part of the yard to help cut down them getting grass seeds in them, but it still not 100 percent fool proof We also put their snoods on when they go out, (when we remember too) but have to watch them closely when they go out with them on, as they tend to slip over their eyes.. We have too huge a block to easily get rid of grass seeds altogether! Luckily they only come out at this time of the year for a period of time.. Years ago with a dog I had, he started getting this really bad smelly paw. It had like small clumps of grass growing out it Took him to the vets to get checked out, and they said it was a badly infected grass seed in his paw, and it had been there for ages and thats why grass had started growing out from it ! eeek. He hadn't been in any pain that i could tell all that time.. Edited December 6, 2012 by Jules♥Cavs
tlc
I'm in a mood about grass seeds today too, we went out for a run and Tully decided to have a roll about 2 minutes later she was shaking her head, I checked her ears sure enough there was a seed or part of one in her ear canal, I took it out and thought all was well and she just looked at me head on the side whimpering, so off to the vets we went, we were there with in 10 minutes of the dam thing getting in and he could see it and she was so good but he just couldnt get it, after 4 goes he said no were going to have to put her out to it! So $180 later. So annoying short of not taking them out its hard to know what to do. Pack their ears with cotton wool? Snoods which would just fall off, keep them in the yard till summers over, not likely! Arghhhh sorry this had nothing to do with how to get rid of seeds just my little vent about seeds! From the mouth of Ted bull pit, someone should blow grass seeds up!!
Daisys Mum
Grass seeds are a PIA! I have to check my Cav 2-3 times a day because not only does she get grass seeds but I am pulling out bindis as well I rent so I have no choice it to check her everyday... She actually quite likes it because she ends up with a mini massage

Sheridan
I would love to lay turf but that doesn't resolve the current problem. I've been picking them off the floor since I've been home. The dogs haven't been outside much but they're such sticky dogs!

Kirislin
I've had some horrendous grass seeds that have been spread through hay that's been brought in. I'll never be able to get rid of it now, ghastly stuff that wouldn't surprise me if it peirces my mares skin and works its way through her body, some types can kill. Sheridan
I looked at Mini's feet last night and she's okay. Looked at Grumpy's this morning and he also seems grass seed free (though from Mini's reaction, you'd think I was torturing him).

Dame Aussie
I almost had a heart attack the other night. We have burrs EVERYWHERE at the moment so each night I go through the dogs and take them all out. Mosley doesn't seem to get many but Lili always has at least twenty strewn throughout her coat. So anyway, I was pulling out burrs when I found what felt like a massive matt in her pants, I started pulling the hair away and realised it was something stuck in the hair, I pulled it apart and it was some humungous seed pod, the size of a lime !! It opened up like something out of Little Shop Of Horrors And I found two more of them! Noticed Lili shaking her head as I was leaving this morning so will have to have a good look at her tonight to make sure there's nothing in there. Sigh. Airedaler
By grass seeds I assume you mean the spear like ones that pull apart. Touch wood but I've not had any problem with these for years now. Our Airedales used to get them in their feet all the time and often we saw no sign of them until the dogs were licking at them and the seed had migrated from it's entry point. We had a run of the seeds going in between the paws and working their way up the leg. The worst we had was about 6 inches up the leg. A sure fire way to remove these. Our vet decided to try this method before he operated to remove the seed. Make up a VERY VERY saturated solution of sugar in water, just keep adding sugar to hot water for as long as you can get it to dissolve - 500g in about 400g of water is what we used. When the solution is cool soak some cottonwool in the solution and wrap around the seed point of entry, cover with plactic wrap and secure with clips or a rubber band and then cover the whole thing in a plastic bag. Try to keep this on for 24 hours or if not that long overnight may be OK. The poulticce will work on the grass seed and draw it out of the entry point. The one I mention above did come out over night. If necessary re apply a fresh poultice and leave it again. In the event that it does not work then the likelihood is that the seed will need surgical removal. Unfortunately this method is only suitable for seeds that enter where a poultice can be used, ears, eyes and noses will need other treament. Good luck Edited December 7, 2012 by Airedaler
