Greylvr
This may have been done before but its always interesting to see the stupid reasons pet are surrendered. I had one because the owners had gotten a new couch and the pet didnt match it. Another on was that they locked their chihuahua puppy in the bathroom for 12 hours and when they let it out it got blood on the carpet from the nails because it had been scratching the door all day. tlc
It ever ceases to amaze me the reasons people surrender pets! Some humans just should not have dogs! Not matching the furniture surely they had a screw loose, that's just crazy and ridiculous!
Maddy
I think our most facepalm-worthy surrender was a greyhound that had bad recall. "You have a greyhound who doesn't always come when called, especially when it's off chasing something? You don't say.."
honeybun
I regularly have contact with those surrendering their dogs and cats, and the "time they moved on" excuse was awful. The usual one where they are now expecting a child or have had one, and there is no time for the poor dog or cat, or the pathetic offering that their life is too busy now to exercise them. The new boyfriend/husband that doesnt like animals one is especially irritating. Or the I am going overseas in a couple of days and need to QUICKLY rehome my pet. Or perhaps they have moved to non pet friendly accommodation....like they didnt know that before they signed the lease or purchased the place. Seems people make life decisions with little or no regard to their pets future welfare. The old pets are especially sad.Quite often no family member will step in to take the pet despite it having been a loyal and loving companion to their relative who has either died or gone into a nursing home. Greylvr
I had a cattle dog dumped for chasing the neighbors chickens. Never touched them or killed any just liked running them around I guess keeping the dog in the yard was all too much.
spyda62
Had one today...I have a cat and three kittens and I am sick of them and want them gone today. Can you come and pick them up now?
mixeduppup
Not a rescue but have had people drop dogs off to me to give to rescues. One lady astounded me. Had had the dog for almost 4 years and her reason was "I feel like I need to focus on one dog and I like the other one better" She then got another dog and dumped the one that was "better" a few weeks later... Guest donatella
The sooner they create a blacklist for serial offenders the better off these animals will be.
tdierikx
The serial offenders will just dump them at the pound instead... or drop them off in a distant suburb to be picked up by the ranger - that's the cheap way of doing it apparently, no surrender fee... Doesn't work as well if the dog is chipped though, but owners can cry poor and not cough up the impound fee, and effectively get rid of the dog for free. Since becoming involved in rescue, nothing at all surprises me any more. Sad, ian't it? T.
Guest donatella
Can't there be some registry like the 'sex offenders' registry that lists all the serial dump offenders, people with animal convictions etc that list names and details of people who are banned from purchasing an animal. I'm sure its a mighty task and people could get around it a million and one ways but I can dream
Maddy
The sooner they create a blacklist for serial offenders the better off these animals will be. I keep my own list of people I wouldn't adopt a dog out to, it's not the perfect solution but it does (hopefully) prevent my dogs becoming some other rescue's problem. The list of compiled from home checks, interviews, etc. Very disturbingly, someone from my list was actually hired to head another rescue group down here. Presumably, they didn't do even a simple interview with the person concerned. I was horrified but sadly, as tdierikx pointed out, not surprised. Guest donatella
That's a good start, I'm sure there are a few names thrown about internally through rescue as serial offenders but they always manage to get another dog some way or another
SkySoaringMagpie
I do keep a shit list. Most recent was wanting to rehome an 11 year old because they couldn't find kennel space over Christmas. I know a lot of people do that, but actually saying it was a new one.
honeybun
I remember a woman with 2 children aged around 8 and 10 who had come to buy a dog,ask me in front of them,if the shelter would take the dog back when they had finished with it. I asked what she meant and she went on to explain that like a lounge or another piece of furniture that you have for some time, and then get sick of and replace. I told her that she would not be good enough for any of our dogs, we wouldnt permit her to buy one and told the children that I would normally tell children to listen to their mother, but in this instance told them their mother was a fool and that a pet was for life and not a piece of furniture to be thrown away when they got sick of it. etc etc I told the woman I hoped she never got a pet. She probably went to a pet shop. Edited December 3, 2012 by honeybun
koalathebear
The one that frustrates/upsets me the most is the seemingly sudden realisation that "I can't offer the dog what it needs" because it's letting them say that this is all for the dog's benefit rather than their own convenience. On a related note, I particularly hate it when they rehome a Kelpie or other working breed and say that it would do best on a farm or a large property. I'm not sure why they assume that dumping a dog on a farm or a farmer is going to solve lack of enrichment/training etc ... Then again as people have pointed out to me, it's frequently for the best - the dog's probably better off finding a chance of a new life with someone who loves and values it rather than living with its previous owners ... One dog I fostered was not treated well at all by his previous owners but he is sooooo precious and adored by his new owners. It's just lovely to see that he has finally found the right home ... MavericksMission
* Dog doesn't play fetch anymore. * We are going away for the week. * We got a new puppy and said older dog doesn't like it. Then you have your general over used, "we had/having a baby" "moving house" We have a blacklist of serial surrenders and other people we wouldn't adopt to. Remarkabull
There are heaps of people on FB buy and sell sites selling/giving away puppies and older dogs, mostly because 'we are moving and can't take dog with us' or 'we have too many animals'. Usually within a few days if said dog has not been rehomed the words 'need gone today' appear. It makes me so sad and angry that these people have no regard for these poor animals they get with no thought and discard them with even less consideration

It makes me so sad and angry that these people have no regard for these poor animals they get with no thought and discard them with even less consideration Oh god, I hate seeing all the Facebook animals.. One last week had a rare blue English staffy pup (5 weeks old) for $1200.. Because they are so rare.. My biggest peeve is the we are having a baby. I had a woman start working for me once (when I was in retail) who asked at work if anyone wanted her husbands 8 year old dog because now she is working part time (she did 12 hours a week), has 2 kids that she just can't deal with the dog.. Some people are just a waste of oxygen..

This is why the cat we adopted was dumped at the shelter. She is so pretty and loving but at least she has a good home now that will keep her forever.
