People's Prejudice Against Dog Breeders.

Yes, but did you ring Dogs Queensland and ask if these people were current members. Did you ask to see their current membership card ?. Did you go to dog shows and speak to other breeders to ascertain that these people were regular breeders ?.

How many regular Joe Blows would know to do this? Not many that I know of...

So sorry to hear this, what the reg papers didn't arrive? Did you view both patents rego papers? Reg to me dosnt neccasaryly mean a healthy dog but if they promised papers that's wrong big time.

thank you, yes I saw the parents papers or papers I believed to be for the parents it wasn't until she'd been here awhile that we started thinking, she wasn't purebred (vet confirmed this down the track) but by then she was our dog and we loved her regardless.

No nothing arrived when I tried to check with the breeder in case they sort of got"lost in the mail" they didn't respond to calls / texts / emails. even drove there once but no one answered the door.

The general public often have no clue about these sorts of things until after they've been jibbed.

It would be really easy if all we had to do was check whether they were members of their state kennel club but that actually tells us very little about their ethics or their practices.

Shame the kennel clubs can't assure the general public of the quality of all their members.

I am sure their are plenty of people that check.

I always offer my current M/ship card and the phone number of Dogs Queensland to check on anything they feel is of importance to them.

Lots of people go onto list and ask questions as to "what to do when purchasing a pure bred" and I believe we give excellent advise.

I am sure we all say do your homework and educated yourself first.

For those that do not do their homework we can only offer sympathy.

A card only states what club you belong to not the standards of practice that you engage in.

The M/ship card I hold states that I am a financial member of Dog Queensland and also gives my Prefix.

Mine and others ethics can be checked by ringing Dogs Queensland and or going to a dog show and speaking to other breeders.

I got a breed prefix the other day - How? Simply by filling in a form, picking 8 names and paying my money it couldn't have been any simpler

This is why we need a single national body. When I applied for my prefix a couple of years ago in NSW I had to complete an open book exam covering things like dog laws, breeding, whelping, good husbandry, etc.

So was this person registed with the state canine?

I was told yes they had membership with dogsQLD.

It's very easy to once you find these forums to sit back and say, oh well didn't check this or that or should have known from XYZ.

But most of us Jo Publics that want healthy pets don't visit this forum or ones like it. because we don't know that we should research the "breeder" to the same extent as the dog.

Did you ring Dogs Queensland after your dogs pedigree papers never arrived? - if not, then DQ can not act- or even know if they were registered members.

Exactly it is quite disappointing when Registered Breeders are who we should turn to but anyone with $110 can be one without any information apart from names - address - nominated breed

In saying that there is a Code of Ethics that need to be followed for members and there would be channels that can be followed for breaches of those

I will probably never ever have a litter but will be showing my pup and thought it was worth getting a prefix

I'm reg WKC not ANKC but it cost me $40 all up to become a reg breeder and get a prefix and it costs $12 per pup to register, the great thing about the WKC is that you can breed to Station bred unreg dogs to extend the gene pool and get more desirable traits and then reg those pups A4 or appendix. This can be good for some WKC breeders whose lines are too close. I don't consider this unethical but a few people I know do. I know that a few ANKC and AKC breeders do it in certain breeds of dogs (don't know which one) but I assume it would be considered quite unethical for just anyone to do it without consultation with the governing body and breed club etc?

@Steve, by ethical I mean doing any health tests that should be done, caring for the dogs and puppies, providing quality of life and not just an existence etc.

and that's how most people got their prefix as well. It's only changed in some states in the last 5 years or so.

Easy they go on list and forums for dogs and ask.

They seem to know where to go to if they have found a problem and they sure complain about us. :)

Wow that attitude doesn't help. Talk about blaming the victim.

People get swindled all the time. Several years ago I would have fallen for the same trick, you don't know until you know. Experience comes just after you need it. It sucks that these people took advantage of the fact of Samisam's lack of knowledge in the area. Samisam trusted someone who sounded and looked trustworthy and that's not something to attack.

Yes the world is full of con artists, do your home work and don't get caught. You didn't get caught did you, bet you did the right thing and ask questions. :)

If you were going to have an operation you would seek out the best doctors and you would ask questions everywhere to make sure you were going to the best.

It's little or no different with anything else, it's easy to come on lists and point fingers at breeders, but if everyone did as we asked and did their homework we wouldn't have the breeder bashing we do have.

Yes we will always some people that don't take heed, but it is rather useless coming on lists and wanting to shut the stable door after the horse has bolted.

Actually I put some blame on our controlling bodies for not advertising more in newspapers to advise people to contact their state controlling body if you are interested in purchasing a pure bred.

People could at least be given some guide lines to follow.

It's not Sami's fault though. I've been swindled other ways, I bought a dog that I was told was from certain lines and later found out it was from another litter and just put in with the litter of pups from that line. People get very creative and lie til the cows come home if it means a quick buck and it's the regular, trusting people that get caught out. The victim should never be blamed for being worked.
