Kirislin
Very pretty. I would love something like that but keeping the Samoyeds out would be impossible  Impossible here too. Hey! there's little things swimming around down here! by kirislin, on Flickr Mum, there's tadpoles in my pool by kirislin, on Flickr Whippapotamus by kirislin, on Flickr
CrazyCresties
I keep saying you dont get mozzies from them if you have fish in there, and the fish require no maintenance. It's easy. I've even put some fish in my horses water trough. Yes I know, but knowing my luck the fish would ignore them
minimax
I showed OH the pics from this thread last night (who can resist a Whippapotamus  ) and she said she's happy to give clamshell pool water plants a try! I may have forgotton to mention the mozzies, but I figure if we get some fish we might avoid the mozzie thing. Kirislin do you have any decent web resources for getting started on water plants? Kirislin
here's a start, but you can also just ask at your local nursery. http://www.ozwatergardens.com.au/home http://www.bluelotusfarm.com.au/ There's a frog forum which has lots of info to help you set up a frog habitat so they'll lay eggs. They also give advice on native fish varieties that will eat the mozzie larvae (wrigglers) http://frogs.org.au/community/

Might take a drive out one day when I have some time (time ... ) to a place that has lots of nurserys so we can investigate and research. Sounds like a new project to keep the girlfriend out of trouble :D (Bet as soon we get rid of the pugs sandpit and fill it with water, they'll want to use it

Dame Aussie
That's awesome kriislin, I didn't realise you could grow veg in them but I guess it's all just hydroponics isn't it.
Loving my Oldies
Can you buy the plants from places like Bunnings? There would be more variety and expertise at a nursery. I'm going to start growing water cress in one of mine, just bought the seeds today. Then I can start having edible water gardens. :D Water cress is delicious. Mustard and cress, too. That's awesome kriislin, I didn't realise you could grow veg in them but I guess it's all just hydroponics isn't it. I think with hydroponics there is fertiliser running through the water. I dont mind him getting into the clam shell, although the fish and taddies probably aren't too impressed.
redangel
Just beautiful Kirislin. I love what you have done. Last year I went to the watergardens up in the hills & I loved it immensely, had a lovely lunch among the lotus & lilies.
