MavericksMission Posted November 23, 2012 Share Posted November 23, 2012 Willow, my westie x had her left hind leg amputated at 12 weeks old after having a fracture early on that never healed. She gets around like nothing is missing and runs just at fast as Maverick and keeps up with her friends. Jayjay my scardey cat had one of his hind legs amputated before I adopted him after being hit by a cat at 11 months old. He copes perfectly fine, gets around and climbs like any of the other cats. He did fine except he sometimes forgot to lean against a wall before trying to from himself with his one remaining leg in that side. So he would fall over lol. Obviously your cat having to go through it is just as bad but as a fellow Sheltie owner I worried I've not experienced it personally but I do have both cats (well now just one) and dogs, and as amazing as dogs are, I still think cats are even more incredible in nature. Since I posted that she walked almost normally past me, she has continued to use the foot correctly. The problem is there is still a lot of swelling and she's still very awkward with it. Her Majesty Dogmad Posted November 23, 2012 Share Posted November 23, 2012 My mum has a Lurcher (hairy Greyhound type) that she adopted from Battersea Dogs HOme 2 years ago. He has a rear leg missing and noone wanted him. He's the most beautiful dog and mum takes him for runs in the local field, unfortunately he is still swift enough to catch rabbits ... I know the specialist is ages away from you, but I would be seeking their advice before doing anything drastic. Are you doing physio with her leg at all? Funny you mentioned that, she did fall behind the TV cabinet yesterday. I had to rescue her, she couldn't pull herself up and out of it. Another thought is the foots been bandaged for a long time because she had a nasty wound on it. The wound is now healed and the bandage came off on Tuesday. That certainly did restrict her movement. madredeperros Posted November 24, 2012 Share Posted November 24, 2012 I had a young bitch who broke her right, front elbow badly enough, that it was amputate, PTS, or have the elbow surgically corrected. Although the surgery option was there, it would have left her with severe arthritis (the specialist's opinion.) No brainer, we chose to amputate. Only four hours after surgery, they opened her cage for a pee, and she ran around the clinic visiting everyone.. It was so much fun trying to keep her quiet for the two weeks rest, that she was supposed to be on :laugh: She could wrestle with the older dogs, and became a master at the one-legged take-down. She had no problem keeping up with racing around the yard either. Glad to hear that your dog might not need surgery ( ) but if it ever comes down to needing it, never worry! He lost his back one after he got out one night and we are guessing someone kicked him really hard and shattered his back leg. He is hilarious to watch as when he runs he runs sideways. He has no trouble mousing and climbing things, he does get stuck occasionally though if he has climbed too high. It has slowed him down a little bit but he is doing fine. Roguedog Posted November 25, 2012 Share Posted November 25, 2012 my girl ruby had three legs, she was up and getting around within 12 hours post op, face planted occasionally but for the most part did very well... once fully recovered she still could do pretty much everything she did before, except agility of course :-) she lost a front leg and was a bull breed type... She was fast, she was fit and once she got used to it it was no handicap! I also used to groom an old GSD with one rear leg amputated. He got around with no issue, though arthritis in his remaining leg was slowing him as he aged (he was 13 though!). The funniest thing was watching him pee as he would cock his remaining leg to do it! collie angel Posted November 29, 2012 Share Posted November 29, 2012 Hi I didn't read all of the replies but we had a collie who had 3 legs he got hit by a car this was when I was very young, he had a plate the vet left it in to long or something's and the bone grew over it, he got cancer and they removed his left front leg mum and dad said he recovered very well and you wouldn't of even known he ever lost his leg he lived till he was 18-19 yrs old he was 7 when he had the operation. Some sort of miracle happened and she unfolded her toes and started walking on the foot, almost normally. There is still nerve damage but I do believe the feeling is coming back. The other night she stretched her leg out, and the outside toe moved, I'd never seen that before. The vet and I are calling her the Miracle Kitty. She started using the leg/foot properly two days after I booked in the amputation surgery. She saw her vet on Tuesday and he had a big grin on his face, and said she may still lose a toe or two, but the leg is safe. I'm not worrying about that, because she's doing so well. One is a 10 month old Wolfhound x that had her rear leg amputated about 6 weeks ago. She is coping really well. It has barely even slowed her down. The other is a 5 month old Ridgeback x. He had his front leg removed about 8 weeks ago. His recovery seems to be taking a bit longer than the wolfy. He still face plants alot and gets tired very quickly.
