Bait Warning, Orange Nsw

I just ran into a lady from the council in the park behind my house. She was out looking for baits and told me that the council has been informed of baits throughout parks all over Orange NSW. Apparently in the last few days 3 dogs have taken the baits, and one of these was on Wirraburra Walk, the leash free area behind Duntryleague golf club. She said they will soon put out an official warning telling people to not let your dogs off lead ANYWHERE.

The baits the council have so far found are meat stuffed with rat poison.

There are horrible people in the world, lets hope no other dogs are killed or sickened by the baits.

Me too Tara8430, Even on lead if Im not looking at my boy and he notices something icky like a dead bird, he will gobble it up before I even notice.

Yeah I wouldn't ever let Abbey off lead I stress to much, but yeah I would say she has 'leave it' to about 85%. But it only takes that 1% for you and the dog to be in trouble. What Park is near you? I only walk Abs CBD and in Cook park.

Are you a lab owner as well?

Summerset Park is behind me, its quite large. Across and down the road a bit from the Robin Hood pub.

Yea thats my lab boy in my profile. He might not look like it with his skinny head but that was from an illness.

Oh okay yeah I know over towards robin hood that's not far away from me but I don't usually walk over that way. Someone I work with leaves off that way and I'll mention it to them tomorrow. Someone's obviously got sick of dogs in the areas and has turned into a sick o icon_smile_mad.gif Makes me so cranky.

Aww your boy looks sweet, how old is he? my black lab is 1.

He will be 11 in just over a month. Got some bad news today actually :( I'll put a post up on the lab forum after dinner, I want to know if anyone else have had the same news.

I just hope no other dogs eat any baits.

DOG lovers are being warned to be vigilant when walking their pets after a substance believed to be snail bait or rat poison was found in two recreational areas of Orange.

Orange City Council spokesman Allan Reeder confirmed there had been two reports of the bait in the past four days, one near a walkway in the Ploughman’s Lane wetlands and the other near the footpath in the leash-free area adjacent to Duntryleague, Wirrabarra Walk.

Mr Reeder said while council didn’t want to alarm people, it was concerning to learn the poison had been left alongside walkways in places frequented by small children and dogs.

“It may well be an emerging trend,” he said.

“We don’t know if they’re targeting dogs but there’s a risk that a small child could pick it up.”

He said council had reported the incidents to police and rangers would step up their patrols.

“Council staff can’t be everywhere so we’d like residents who live near areas such as leash free parks to be on the lookout,” Mr Reeder said.

He said it was more important than ever for dogs to be effectively controlled in leash-free areas.

“Dogs must be able to come immediately when called, and respond to commands,” he said.

Mulberry Lane Veterinary Clinic veterinarian Judith Carney said a dog could die as a result of ingesting snail bait.

She said she had recently treated a dog that had ingested snail bait and it was lucky to survive.

She said the dog suffered several seizures and required hospitalisation for three days before recovering.

Dr Carney said leaving snail bait in areas frequented by dogs was criminal.

“I think it’s a real worry,” she said.

“Snail bait is palatable for dogs but it’s very toxic.”

Dr Carney warned people to be careful when walking their dogs.

“I’d advise caution and recommend you just pop them on a lead"
