Pretty Miss Emma
So, I started using a white and a black shampoo on Hamish because he goes and does some shows. Anyway, I started with just whatever I could find (because I had no idea what to get and no time to get something good!), but I will need some more in the nearish future and am wondering what other people use and your thoughts on them. I have been recommended Kelco, which I will likely try, and I know that I will possibly have to try a few different sorts to get a good idea. Both my kids are BC's and are black and white. And now that I've been using these on Hamish I like them so will probably use them on Kenzie as well periodically. Also do you dilute down your shampoos to make them last longer (and I guess maybe be nicer to the coat)? Any thoughts welcome!
Guest donatella
I don't show my girls but I use Plush Puppy on them (show quality style stuff) and I know they have black and white shampoos and all sorts of style creams etc. Smells soooo gooooood. http://www.plushpuppy.com.au/
Clyde
My fave whitening is Champion Tails (horse). It highlights other colours too so is fab for Cav's, Saints etc as it really makes the red pop.
dancinbcs
I have never needed a black shampoo. Mine have all been genetically so black that it wouldn't matter what I washed them in. They also have genetically white whites so I rarely needed a whitening shampoo either. Personally I like the PP Body Building shampoo and the occasional use of PP Deep Cleansing shampoo but have used the Kelco Plum white as well and it is pretty good. You have to watch that the whitening shampoos don't build up and cause a grey tint. The Deep Cleansing or a clarifying shampoo will remove it if it happens. Most good shampoos recommend diluting them but I prefer to put a small amount neat on my hands, rub them together to build up a lather than apply it to a fairly wide area of the dog. The only one I dilute is the PP Sensitive Skin one I use on my sensitive boy because I want the minimum of anything on him but it doesn't give the finish of the Body Building one I used to use on him. I have tried Champion Tails but I don't like it on long coats.
Salukifan
I've never found the black shampoos to be particuarly effective. I'd suggest you use a whitening one on the white bits and a decent conditioning shampoo on the rest. For whitening, Chris Christensen and Plush Puppy are both good. Next one I buy will be the Agrani as I find their other products really good.
bedazzledx2
Champion Tails is a very effective whitening shampoo...however, I developed a severe alergic reaction to it and so did dogs suseptable to skin problems. I have always been susceptable to skin alergies so I think I am pre-disposed and probably skin alergy dogs are too.
Clyde
I am prone to skin things too but have thankfully had no problems with the Champion Tails. Some other products really set me off which is why I am not very adventurous and just stick to about 3 different types of shampoo. When I first started groooming the salon used mainly Fidos which made my hands fall apart, I didnt think I'd be able to continue grooming but then worked elsewhere with a different product with no problems. It's just been trial and error. I've just stuck with what I know for about 10 yrs now. A shame, as I love trying new things, smells etc but not worth the risk. BC Crazy
I use CC for whitening & CC Black on Black for black obviously  Plush Puppy would be my 2nd choice. They make a white shamp. & black one as well. Great products too. If your whites are stained in any way try PP Wonder Block. Great for getting out any yellowing or discolouration. PP Deep cleansing shampoo is good, I use it as a pre wash. You only need to use a small amount of any of these products I have found. But I don't dilute them. I always do their black first & then their whites. With the white one I leave it on for about 5 mins then rinse off. Brings the whites up lovely. I also do their feet twice. I also put a little bit of vinegar in the final rinse as I find it helps to remove all the chemical residue out of the coat & leaves coat nice & shiney :) I use Lazor Lites lanolin conditioner on the pants & tail as mine are big salt water swimmers but you wouldn't need to do that as it would make Hamish's coat too heavy :) Must add that I don't show my 2 PME, just like them to look good. Oh & just make sure that you are careful with the Black Shampoo which ever one you choose as it could stain your whites if you accidently spill some say on their, rinse it off immediately :) Edited November 7, 2012 by BC Crazy
Alyosha
Champion Talis Silver Highlights here too - on my whites as well as the black. And they always get lovely comments when shown. Plush Puppy make a black Shampoo - Black Opal. But the instructions say not to get any on white areas so I haven't used it (my black/tri boy is Irish marked like a BC) - don't want black trickles down white legs from rinsing! I have used the Plsh Puppy whitening one, with Ginseng. It is good too but I still prefer the Champion Tails. I dilute 1:10. Conditioner 2:10. Crisovar
I find Petway Petcares Diamonds and Pearls excellent on whites and smells divine, their new Wicked White is awesome too. I love that the Diamonds and Pearls is so gentle, and brings the coats up beautiful. It is definitely my favourite shampoo :)
BC Crazy
I haven't tried any of those Crisovar. Have to put them on the " to try" list :)
Pretty Miss Emma
Interesting about the black shampoo and some people not really finding it that effective as I have sort of been thinking the same thing with the one I've used on Hamish adn didn't know if it was because I had a cheap one or if it just isn't as effective. Maybe that is the answer! I guess I might try another black to see how it goes but will certainly heed the advice about the colour running and not getting it on whites, so will look for that detail on the labels!! Now to filter through and think about whites!!! I try not to wash my dogs too often so hopefully won't have the problems that can happen with the whites, but I'll be cautious! About a month or so ago I realised that Kenz hadn't had a bath in months and there was a high likelihood that Hamish had had more baths in his short time with me than Kenzie ever had!! piper
My fave whitening is Champion Tails (horse). It highlights other colours too so is fab for Cav's, Saints etc as it really makes the red pop. Same - and it does the blacks well too. I recently bought some Kelco Plum White and have been happy with that as well. I understand what dancinbcs says about genetically white and black coats but no matter how genetically white Jazz is, clay still stains so a stain remover and a good shampoo is needed. I can tell the difference when I sue a normal shampoo or a whitening shampoo. Although I never found the Plush Puppy 1 brought her up really well yet I know others swear by it. It also depends how porous the hair is. Some coats take up stains a lot more than others do. I had one BC bitch who never stayed dirty but others have had coats you can feel dirt clinging too and see the staining. The full brother to the "clean one" loved dust baths so he was always dirty. The same goes for my JS. He has a heavy non-porous coat that the dirt and even grease just drops off. He is always white, bathed or not but his sire has a completely different coat that is a bit of a battle to keep white. One thing I did learn early on with Borders was to never leave dirt on the whites. Rinse out fresh mud/dust with clean water and remove grass sap with warm water asap. This cuts down on a lot of work keeping them white.
JulesP
A month from moving from red dirt and my borders have white whites again! wooohooo. No more stupid comments about their colour! I haven't washed them either. No shampoo I tried got them really white on the red dirt. I preferred the Equinade Glo White to Champion Tails. The more purple the colour of the shampoo usually the stronger it is.
Diva
I used to use Champion Tails on my white Borzoi but I've found if I can keep her coat in very good condition I don't need it. Her coat looks better than it ever has now that I use very minimal product. I had previously tried Chris Christensen and Isle of Dogs but they were both too harsh on her coat. PP was OK but not as effective on her as the Champion Tails. (mind you I'm not on red dirt, just Canberra clay. Red dirt might be more of a challenge) Edited November 8, 2012 by Diva
Guest Clover
Most of your whitening ones will do a fine job. The blackening ones I have tried turned my borders coats horrid though.
Guest Arcane
Equinade Glo White all the way for me. I add the Glo White to my regular shampoo diluted in a 1 litre squeezy bottle. So washing a B/collie in the salon I would put 2-3 pumps (30-60 ml) of shampoo (usually Petway Herbal) and 1 pump (30 ml) of Glow White, fill with warm water, shake & go. If you wanted more intense whitening then just put the Glo White & add water , but I don't find it cleans particularly well, just whitens really well, that's why I add it to a highly concentrated general shampoo. espinay2
I use and prefer Chris christansen and plush puppy. The white shampoos will enhance both black and white. Rinse with some sea breeze oil in it and it helps protect the coat. You can also buy the purple dye separately from wampum. I use a capful in the bucket along with the oil for my final rinse.
