Guest donatella
I was brushing Bonnie my puppy this afternoon and have noticed what looks exactly like dandruff for dogs. Should I be doing something? Washing her in something special or supplementing with something? She is an itchy dog in general compared to my other one so she gets bathed in Aloveen but not very often as this can strip her coat. She's also going through a coat drop from puppy to adult coat. noisymina
Next time you are at the vet, get it checked out. THEN you will know if it is fungal/bacterial or whatever and can work on it more effectively. Pyohex make a cream that your might like to try - depending on how wide spread it is. It may just be in one area - like on the back just in front of the tail where Kaisie used to get it.
trifecta
Bathing in Erny's calendula tea infusion would be my recommendation & adding something like megaderm or plain old extra virgin organic coconut oil to the diet will probably help too. We are currently seeing a dermatologist for allergy issues and she has started us on a barrage of topical treatments, (in conjunction with immunotherapy ). Some of the simple, topical things that are helping my itchy, flaky dog are: 1. Using QV wash to bathe him. We used to use Aloveen, I think the QV wash is definitely gentler. 2. Making up a spray bottle of QV bath oil and water. You spray or wipe it onto the dry, itchy areas daily. 3. Applying PAW 'Essential 6' oil to the coat, weekly, in the same place as a spot on. It spreads over the body. 4. And yes, Erny's calendula tea rinse got the big thumbs-up from the dermatologist. :D We have also had to add fish oil and evening primrose oil to his diet, but you'd need to check on this (and dosage etc) with your vet I think? Good luck. :) edited to add: Just re-read your OP and if she is dropping puppy coat, maybe it's related to that? My suggestions might be overkill! I have a short-coated breed, and don't know much about long coats. Edited November 5, 2012 by trinabean
Guest donatella
Thanks for the suggestions all! I definitely think I need to add an oil to her diet, will try the wash and am trying a new food to see if that helps too
trinabean
Ooh, forgot to say, the QV wash and QV bath oil is available from chemists' as it's a 'people' product. I bought the mega bulk size (big allergy dog + one of my children has exzema, woohoo 2 for the price of one!) For a little dog, you won't need much though.
