mixeduppup
I've been watching a few movies about dogs lately and have noticed that American GRs and labs to a lesser degree seem to be darker than their Aussie cousins. Some of the GRs are almost Irish Setter colouring and was just wondering why Australia doesn't have those colours, or am I just not seeing them? GoldenGirl85
Darker colours aren't as popular here, but the very dark ones (mahogany coloured) aren't accepted under the breed standard Edited November 2, 2012 by GoldenGirl85
mixeduppup
Thanks, I was starting to wonder if they were crossed with IS. Are there any really dark lines in Australia or are they mostly the lighter colours?
GoldenGirl85
From what I understand the lighter coloured dogs do better in the show ring, so that is what people breed for Personally I like the darker Goldies (gold not mahogany)
GoldenGirl85
Don't get fooled by the 'silver' labs in the US, they're crossed with Weims
mixeduppup
yeah, I've read about the silver labs, silliness. I love the darker goldens as well :)
tdierikx
My Lab girl was very "red" when she was a pup - and still goes through phases of being a bit darker than the average yellow at certain times of the year. There is a "red" in Labs, yes? But I've never seen them in Australia... I'd prefer that over chocolate... I'm not a fan of chocolate Labs myself. T. Alkhe
I was under the impression that it was a popularity thing as well, and that people tend to want lighter coloured GRs, which leads to more lighter ones around. I met a woman at dog school who wanted a darker coloured one and had a relaly hard time finding darker dogs!
GoldenGirl85
Labs only come in three colours, yellow, chocolate and black

GoldenGirl85
This picture shows the range of colours in Goldens, obviously the dogs on either end aren't goldens My favourite colour is the guy looking at the camera
Chequeredblackdog
There is a beautiful dark gold bitch at the dog training I go to, she is very pretty. I like the gold or darker colours in GRS and Labs, Most of the ones I see are very pale, almost verging on white.
mixeduppup
Fluke is the darkest gr I've seen, not sure of his purity though

Pretty cool if you ask me - I wish partis were able to be registered in Australia! Tell me this isn't the cutest dog - my mum's byb Toy Poodle Gretel, phantom colouring. Aidan3
Darker goldens tend to be from field lines. These guys have sent pups to NZ and Japan, but they were fairly moderate in colour (were selected for other attributes than colour). A darker coat can hide the mud a bit better, but more importantly, the coarser coat sheds mud and dries faster. My old boy was fairly dark, more of an old English style. He had a very low maintenance coat despite quite heavy feathering.
Podengo
There is a gorgeous golden here who I believe is from working lines, took these pics of her at an agility show. She is very athletic and awesome fun to watch! If I ever got a golden I would want one just like her! :)
