mac'ella
Hi Iam taking the dogs(boxer and staffie) to south coast,Tomakin, and have just found out that Proban is no longer available,am thinking Advantix as an alternative but would appreciate some input from those who live in tick areas, they will be swimming each day and I am wary of Frontline as our previous Staffie reacted badly to it,tho our girl doesnt have any skin problems at all, I have them on Advocate presently,is it safe to double up medications? any advice will be greatly appreciated
sheena
Advantix...apply it to several spots on the skin along their back & keep them out of the water for 48 hrs afterwards. You will still have to check them daily at least.
dee lee
We stay in the sthn highlands regularly and when we visited the vet there recently (& asked the same question), he recommended we use advocate monthly with advantix every 2 weeks. Safe to use together & protects the dog from everything. (we use advocate normally) It's such a bugger about Proban, it was so convenient to use for short visits. That's a mighty big dose of imidacloprid there. Confidor pesticide for use on crops has 0.125g per litre. Our government mandates that you can't eat the foods for 1-7 days after spraying. Advocate + Advantix each have 100g per litre imidacloprid. Using the three 4mL tubes of the monthly combination you suggest contains 1.2g of imidacloprid. This is the same amount of imidacloprid as in 9.6 Litres of Confidor pesticide - in a month! That's 13 bottles of Confidor. Monthly on one dog. http://www.yates.com.au/products/pest-control/insects-ready-to-use/bayer-confidor-insecticide-ready-to-use/ Why not try and target the ticks specifically, rather than unintentionally trebling the dogs dose of imidacloprid?
