Canine Coach
After waiting many months, a bitch, who lives in Canberra is now, suddenly in season & is apparently ready to be bred very soon, to a dog here in Melbourne Apparently, "making a booking & flying a dog out of Canberra on a weekend,is impossible", according to Virgin Blue Qantas Both said no one is available at Australian Air Express to take a booking until Monday morning Neither will accept direct boookings. The phones at Jet pets, Dogtainers & Pet Express are not answering & we have been told that no one will be available till Monday, at the earliest to take a booking No one is available to drive the bitch Any ideas? SkySoaringMagpie
It's correct, no-one will be available on the weekend in Canberra. I have been caught by this before but fortunately tried to book right at the start of her season so had time to rebook the flights to get the mating. Sorry, no other ideas. Road is probably the way but at this late notice and with a bitch in season it will probably be too hard for her to hitch a ride. The greyhound people here might be able to comment on whether there is a regular greyhound transport run to Melbourne on the weekend and whether they would take a bitch in season... Edit: If this was me, something I might try is meeting in Albury-Wodonga, but then I'd probably drive to Melb anyway. When I had trouble with flights it was to Perth. Tralee
Fly down in person and take the 'girl' as excess baggage. The extra cost is nominal.

Doesn't matter Tralee, they have to go as freight from Canberra even if they are going with a passenger and they don't accept animals on the weekend. Salukifan
Has she been prog tested? Shout the dog's owner a motel room and meet in Albury??? Or drive the bitch to Sydney and fly her from there?? Edited October 12, 2012 by Haredown Whippets

Very unfortunate, but personally, and I have mated a bitch first thing Monday morning with an interstate sire, I would have had a few contingency plans in place. Mating dogs is a highly skilled and expensive enterprise. It doesn't all just .... happen.

Pockets
I agree, drive the bitch the 2.5 hours to Sydney and fly with her :) AAE fly dogs out of Sydney on weekend as long as they reach their destination by 3pm :)
Tralee
Mating dogs is a highly skilled and expensive enterprise. It doesn't all just .... happen. Actually sometimes it just .... does. :) Maybe I should have been more specific. Mating dogs, for the betterment of the breed, with two carefully chosen and well vetted dogs, often sourced over great distances and with extreme due diligence and courteousness, between two or more people who are often complete strangers, after long and lengthy health checks and progesterone monitoring, together with maintaining mating charts and sourcing AI specialists when required can be a highly skilled and expensive enterprise. Of course, randomly mating two dogs of dubious breed qualities sometimes just happens.
wayrod
CC, Have also sent you an PM. You can only fly freight animals out of Canberra Airport on Qantas/Australian Air Express. Unfortunately AaE @ Canberra Airport is closed now (2100pm) and reopens at 0800AM for bookings. Do people in Canberra have a crate? or access to a crate? The people in Canberra may be able to get on flight over weekend, although restricted flight times exist on weekends. Flights with freight animals normally have to conclude by 1500PM. Send me a PM if you need assistance. Wayrod Edited October 12, 2012 by wayrod

You are my "hero" Thank you for going WAY (pun intended), beyond the call of duty, to do what I was told by the airlines etc., was "impossible" Thanks so very much, for the enormous amount of assistance you gave me to get the Bitch on a flight from Canberra to Melbourne this weekend You are a magician. I breed 1-2 litters a year & often, pups fly to new homes, which are interstate. ANY time in future, if I need a Pet Care & Transport service you will be 1st on my list of who to call & who to reccommend to others To the rest of people who offered ideas & assistance. Thank you so much!!!! I intend to name a pup after each of you.

Canine Coach
Excellent result :) Lovely to know you have someone you can count on for good customer service and that will do all they can to help. Wayrod was absolutely amazing! I have truly never come accross anyone more helpful. The mating had been planned for 1 year. Stud dog carefully chosen; (stud dog lives approimately 350 KM SOUTH of Melbourne) I planned to drive bitch to stud dog at the right time. The bitch has been like clockwork with her seasons, till now. Bitch was not due for season till 1 1/2 months from now, Co owners/carers, carefully planned to drive her to Melbourne 2 weeks BEFORE expected season was expected to begin. Owners went away for 10 days overseas. Arrived home to CANBERRA, Friday night after 18 hour flight & housesitter/Mother In Law, (not a dog person not a breeder), mentions she "thinks the bitch has been in season for about a week". Hopefully with Wayrod help alls well & will end well
