Best Specialists In Melbourne

Recommended Posts

I'm desperately seeking a good internal medicine specialist in Melbourne - tips anyone?

Others may want advice on the best person to get referred to for other types of problems.

Thought a forum for sharing experiences could help?

For eye specialists, I've been very impressed with Animal Eye Care in East Malvern.

Best wishes

Daniela

For eyes I definitely say Animal Eye Care in Malvern. I have used the physio at advanced vet care and have heard very good things about their surgeries and specialists there. I seen a specialist over at Melbourne veterinary specialist centre in glen Waverly. She was pretty good considering my golden retriever was battling an auto immune disease and her treatment plan was tricky to get her under control.

She was very nice in sending us a sympathy card when Charlotte was PTS too.

I have had to use Pete Laverty from Melbourne Vet Referral Centre in Glenwaverley a couple of times for specialist surgery.

His knowledge and expertise are second to none and his client skills and communication are excellent also.

Brilliant!!

I agree. Pete Laverty performed the spinal surgery on my Cavalier. Today you would never know anything had ever happened to him. He walks, runs and plays normally. I have utmost confidence in Pete Laverty.

Another vote for Animal Eye Care, although it was for a cat (who thinks he's a dog!) They were fabulous and, although Dizzy's case was fairly unique and some new surgery might have done the trick, they opted not to operate as he was doing so well. I could see the 2 specialists were itching to try the new surgery but it was always about Dizzy's welfare.

I am so happy to read this as my boy has an appointment with Pete in a month and also with Ray Ferguson for severe Hip Dysplasia.

Pete Laverty is brilliant. My boy was paralysed from the shoulders down. He ran out the back door for his early morning pee and fell in a sceaming heap for no apparent reason. I took him to the vet immediately and asked for a referral to Pete who saw him right away.

He gave me reasonably good odds that surgery would help my boy walk and suggested an immediate myelogram. He called me whilst my boy was still under general anaesthetic and said the disk had ruptured and was pressing on the spinal cord so no messages were getting from the brain beyond the area of the rupture. He suggested immediate surgery while my boy was still under GA and of course I agreed.

This was neary 4 years ago now and my boy was doing a wobbly walk within 2 days. Pete gave me instructions on how to care for my dog and I took him to see Pete every couple of days for the first couple of weeks. There has been no deterioration at all since the surgery and he's perfectly normal in every way.

Pete is a very skilled surgeon and you can feel very confident he will do right by your boy. Best of luck with your dog.

Oh my goodness that must have been terrifying :( Your poor boy but I am so pleased he is going strong! Thank you, I have communicated with him via email and my pup will need a total hip replacement...on both sides :(

It was terrifying, I had no idea what happened. I was in such a hurry to get him to the vet that I didn't realise until half way though the vet consult that I was still wearing my PJ's. No one noticed, we were all concerned about my little Cavalier.

If your pup needs a total hip replacement you can feel confident you've got the right man for the job. He's a nice man Bianca. My boy came home from hospital on the morning of day 4. Pete called me on night 3 about 9.30pm. He was excited because he had my boy outside and wanted me to know that he'd just passed some faeces. That was a big deal because it meant that the messages from the brain were getting through to his back end. Successful surgery!

I was told I'd probably have to manually express his bladder for a day or two but on the first day he came home he wobbled outside with me in tow and he peed on his own. I kept him crated for most of the time, and Pete taught me how to do the physio myself.

I wish you the very best of luck with your pup. If your pup isn't crate trained, now would be a good time to do it. It will make everything so much easier for you all.

Oh wow he really does sound wonderful and I bet that phone call made your year!!!

I so hope I will be able to learn the physio aspect as there is no-one around here. Thankfully yes I crate trained him from day 1! :) Thank you again!

Yes, we were all very happy about the pooping. Only a dog owner would understand anyone getting excited about dog poop :happydance2:

He and his nurses will demonstrate and then take you through the physio part of it. Don't worry, they'll make sure you know how to do it the right way.

Hi Daniela,

I'm voting for Advanced Vetcare in Kensington too. We had or girl operated on there recently and David was fantastic!! The good thing was that as we're about 1 1/2 hours away from Melbourne, we could pick her up late as they have a 24 hour emergency dept. David ha briefed the night shift staff so they could give us all the info we needed.

He also made a point of calling after she'd had her MRI to recommend surgery and talked me through everything.

Another vote goes to Ray Ferguson at Monash. Same girl saw him for her hips. She had a course of stem cell therapy with Ray and he also showed us how to do particular exercises with her for her back and hips. We live even further away to Monash, but I would do it all again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone. Unfortunately we lost our girl the other week, but if I had another dog that needed those treatments I would be back in a flash. Definitely both my top choices.
