greytpets
Are there any rescue groups in Melbourne that will take on an older rottie girl (prefer foster care)? Apparently there is no rottie rescue in Vic & I'm really having trouble finding anyone that might help this lovely older girl. Lucy is a pure bred rottie, I'm told she is 6 or 7 years old. It looks like she has had pups in the past & from what little I can find out about her history she has been through a few homes & was originally bred in NSW (breeder unknown). She is currently living on a greyhound property (how I came across her) but needs to get out of there asap as she is not coping with being kenneled. Thanks in advance. Alkhe
I don't know anyone in these groups personally, but they do take on older dogs and use foster carers - Save a Dog Scheme - www.saveadog.org Vic Dog Rescue - www.victoriandogrescue.org.au I suggest contacting them and if they're unable to help wtih taking her on, they may at least be able to point you in the right direction or to somebody who may be able to help or foster. PErhaps also post in the Rottie thread here and see if anyone would offer to foster her and get her listed on PetRescue?

cavNrott
Have you tried AAPS in Keysborough. They frequently take the older Rotties and they're a wonderful caring group. I've taken a few of their older Rotts over the years. Under normal circumstances I would take her but unfortunately I have a badly injured back and am unable to walk more than a few steps so I'm not a suitable carer. I feel useless knowing she needs someone and I can't help. I feel sure AAPS will help if they have room for her. Blue Cross often helps Rotties too. I'd be more than happy to take on an older foster but have just actually signed up to foster with a rescue, and am waiting on a call from them wiht a dog that is ready. I'm sure there will be positive outcome here - at least he is safe for the moment.
greytpets
Thanks for the replies. I was hoping to find her a rescue with foster care as she is not coping in the kennels she is currently at but it looks like AAPS might be her only chance. I've been really surprised by the lack of options for her. And I thought greyhound did it tough.

Nothing has changed. It's so sad isn't it? It's unfortunately impossible for me to take her, as much as I would like to. I can't walk more than a few steps with my back injury. I know AAPS will take good care of her but she would be so much better in a home environment.

greytpets
Just an update on Lucy. Sadly she was euthanized today. While she had the sweetest nature her physical problems were severe. X-rays showed she had major problems from dysplasia (?) in both her left hip & right elbow with resultant deformity & would have been in severe pain for a long time. Despite this she was just so gentle & grateful for every kindness shown to her. R.I.P. Lucy. Sorry I couldn't help you more. You were such a brave girl. I hope there is no more pain now. I'm so angry & sad to think that she was used for breeding with these problems. I pity all her pups & the people who own them.
