TheCheekyMonster
Long story short, due to Gus running around like a spastic up and down stairs and even in the back yard he now has funny back legs they hyper extend and the ligaments are lose, I have seen a ciro about it and he has said its not perminant damage but stairs are out of the questions and so is any other crazy running around....his legs dont seem to be improving, is there anything I can give him to help with the strengthening of the muscles and ligaments? and something that works and people have tried or recommend.... thank you :)
oakway
You could always try massive doses of vit C.
puglvr
I take my pug boys to a Bowen Therapist. One has issues with trigger points and the younger one (will be 1 this month)had a loose tail and was down on his pasterns. She made comment that he was very soft in his muscles and ligament/tendons and recommended I put him on Blackmores Vitamin C to help with the formation/strengthening of his connective tissues. Havd had him home for roughly 4 weeks now and there is a noticable differencea - e has put on weight, his tail is not loose and he is coming up on his tendons. oakway
You could always try massive doses of vit C. how much is a massive dose? I gave a Whippet six 1000 IU tablets twice a day till the condition improved. You can not overdose so I have been told. They only pee out what they don't use. Steve
Id give him Aloe Juice - Ive seen that work miracles with ligaments and such BUT its not normal for dogs legs to do what you are describing for the reasons you have given and Id be wanting a quick second opinion. persephone
.his legs dont seem to be improving, is there anything I can give him to help with the strengthening of the muscles and ligaments? Gus is a year old ..and I would think now that he should be able to run & play without these problems ? What advice does his breeder have? Are any others in his litter/line having similar problems? Has he had Xrays? What daily 'forced' exercise has he been getting ..how far a day on lead ..and how much free running at parks etc ? he runs to meet me of an evening and his back legs just give, he used to have such a strong stance. :( this is just sad, and could also be dangerous .. if he loses control like that, he could fall/break/dislocate something , or stretch things more. Please see a vet .. and /or a specialist , if xrays & thorough examination warrant it. also... The Chiro may be exttemely helpful , however IF you do need to refer back to Gus's problem at a further date..you will need a definite VETERINARY diagnosis . I would suggest CAUTION before diving into massive doses of Vit. C as well. I have read on here posts about Dallys with bladder stones etc ..and think you would be wise to check carefully as to how Dallys cope with this treatment. Vit. C is not entirely harmless ... and if you are inexperienced, do your research first :) Better safe than very very sorry . Hope Gus is strong and sure again .... The Spotted Devil
What pers said. I wouldn't be feeding a Dally additional vitamin C as it may acidify the urine. Please see a vet and talk to your breeder as this does not sound right. Edited October 10, 2012 by The Spotted Devil
TheCheekyMonster
I was told his ligaments were loose, and at 18 months they should start to correct themselves, but I honestly think crating him during the day will end up being my only option because he runs like a nut all day regardless of anyone being in the back yard.... and he can not stop himself he tried to stop and his back legs will slide, I know its not normal as I havent seen a dog this young walk like that.... no one else in his litter has it that i know of,I'll take him to the vet this weekend and see what they say any recommendations of a vet who would be able to give me some sound advise? TSD, I check Gus's urine regularly if vit c will help strengthen his ligaments then i'm willing to give it a try, but I'll see what a vet says before i do anything. @persephone the excersice he gets is 30 minutes of walking on lead and about 20 off lead at the park(twice a day).... 7 times out of 10 there is other dogs at the park... when there is no one at the park he will still just run, he has a real love of sprinting for as long as he can. The rest of the time he is up stairs with me laying down chewing and destroying toys, he does have a sliight arch in his lower back that does look a little uncomfortable and he is not a fan of anyone toughing his lower back, he turns around and smiles...... he comes from very good lines, none of these issues are in his gene pool neither is the skin problems he gets so it must be environmental. Ok.. just to ease your mind and make sure nothing's amiss .. maybe get a referral to an orthopaedic vet or similar? Then you could just plan ahead :)

Starkehre
I'd be getting a second opinion, this would concern me How old is he now? He is 1 year old . Edited, I thought I read somewhere that Gus was 12 months old, now I can't find it, so maybe I was imagining things Edited, checked back, Gus is now approx 14 months old. I hope Gus has not been exercising and moving around in this fashion for more than a couple of months. This all really concerns me a bit. I would expect a radical change of environment is called for here and pretty quickly. Controlled exercise, any excess weight stripped right off and keep away from added calcium such as commercial puppy formula foods (wet or dry), milk, cheese and even yoghurt for a while. I agree with using vitamin C, but not ridiculous amounts. Definitely have an open and honest talk with his breeder. If you do not get much help there, my suggestion would be to take Gus along to a reputable Myo or Bowen therapist. If they are good, they should know what is going on and may be able to assist to some degree. Ask their opinion on also going to see a ortho specialist. Gus' issues are almost definitely environmental/diet related. Good luck getting it under control. I most certainly would not be waiting another few months to see if this gets better on it's own. The joints are unlikely to improve with this amount and style of exercise and he has an issue with his back.
