mixeduppup
So I'm entering a competition in a few weeks and have three edited photos. The first category is an edited photo of anything, so I have the three to pick out of. The second is a portrait of a person, can be edited or unedited. Can you tell me which of the three you like for the edited photo and which of the two people for the portraits, please? Thank you
Lady Flying Furball
I like the second for the edited and the third for the portrait :)
minimax
I like the third for the portrait, but I don't like either of the others. I wouldn't enter a portrait in a non-portrait category if there was a portrait category, if you know what I mean.
tlc
Definatley the third one for the portrait shot, I'm not sure if its just me but the first one looks extremely grainey (noises) maybe that's the effect you have gone for?
mixeduppup
I was going for grainy but maybe I overdid it. hmm back to drawing board
persephone
Either third or second for portrait :) I love the second one, actually! That first one has so many great angles/shadows! ..and interesting broken windows ..old poles with porcelain insulators- lots of good stuff! :) What happens when you crop certain areas to get those angles featured? Does it look different ?
mixeduppup
I did try cropping it but it took something away. Maybe I'll undo the grainy effect or make it less? It''s the old slaughterhouse in Bourke.
Rozzie
Third for the portrait. Got nothing for the other one.
PossumCorner
The building is interesting, but a bit PJ for a comp unless the category is more tailored to it (doesn't sound like it). It needs a good caption to keep the interest, rightly or wrongly supporting or contributing captions do have an influence. "It's the old slaughterhouse in Bourke" needs some tuning: there is a story there to make them take a second look.
mixeduppup
There's also a nature section. I have a couple of options or this one not sure about this one, the clarity could be better Edited October 1, 2012 by mixeduppup
mixeduppup
These can be edited, these are just the originals. any ideas on how I can make them better?

persephone
I also wish Captions were permitted ... it helps . Anyway ..amazing countryside!! I like number 3 A lot. There is lots to rest my eye on ..and with a bit of tweaking .. that little log area can be helped along, I'm sure. Technically wise- I have NO idea, sorry ..I just know which one I came back to . :)
mixeduppup
Thanks everyone! Yes that's the Smith river in California, up in the Redwood forest. Just gorgeous! The 3rd one is a stream in Virginia. I have to get a better camera and go back!
Are You Serious Jo
Are you entering for fun or are you really trying to win? Do you want an honest answer? I'm not going to say anything unless you really want to hear it.
mixeduppup
It's just for the local show. I won last year with my photo of a cat. You don't actually win a prize. You can give me an honest answer but be nice I'm pretty sick at the moment and very sensitive lol
Are You Serious Jo
Local shows are a lot less lenient but there'll probably be still be some entries from people who produce really good shots. The only one I can see that is competition level is the mirror portrait one. The first landscape is nice, but it's an album shot and would probably get put aside on first look over. Landscape needs good light and great composition and jump out at you. But if you are just having fun with it then put in what you like.
