simmy78
HI all newbie to the site... My Issue is my 15mth old Amstaff has stinky breath all vet check has been 100% normal and teeth and gums are fine, he is on a diet of wet food one night and dry food the next, the vet said that this was ok as you don't want to feed him too much tin food as it really isn't good for them. But my question is what is the best diet to give to an amstaff should I go back to the dog mince (chicken) vegies and rice for his meals and sardines for treats, he is also hard to feed dry biscuits too cause certain brands he won't eat..... Any suggestions would be awesome thanks all
ellz
I'd be looking into raw feeding to be honest. Raw meaty bones, veges etc. You wouldn't be feeding a lot of dry food if you feed raw (if any) and your dog would certainly benefit, not least in better breath! minimax
Sounds like his food is probably the cause of his stinky breath. What goes in is what comes out!

However we feed a combination of raw meat, chicken carcasses, bones and royal canin kibble for convenience... A good raw diet doesn't need the kibble, I am just getting lazy, so it makes for a quick breaky a couple of days a week.. My boy thinks kibble is a treat because we usually use it a couple of times a week mixed with cottage cheese or peanut butter to stuff into his kongs... So he is happy whenhe gets a half a cup or so for breaky now and then.
simmy78
But what if the raw meat I give him he turns his nose up? Ive tried chicken wings necks and he doesnt like them what good raw meat is best to give him, and doesnt raw meat give them upset guts so when the food starts to digest and if he farts we will all die LOL, so what is the best raw food to give him.... Thank's all for the help
Staffyluv
Personally, I feed kangaroo (yep he farts with this), beef (especially brisket bones), whole chicken carcasses from the meat department in Woolworths and chicken necks... He gets a whole chicken carcass for breaky (or a few necks), then at dinner time he gets roo or beef or a mixture of roo and beef (sometimes minced and other times it is whole chunks. He gets some kibble mixed with either peanut butter or cottage cheese in his king a few times a week. He gets a few brisket bones a week but lamb flaps and roo tails are just as good (I don't use lamb as I find it upsets his tips my a bit due to the fat level)... He also gets fruit and veg to just eat or chew on, carrots are great, so are apples.. He might get a raw. egg (shell and all) once a week as well.. Bones clean their teeth. Dogs have a really quick digestive tract compared to ours, raw wont upset their stomach... My old Stafford was on cooked food and his farts would clear a room in minutes... My new guy is raw, with a bit of kibble a few times a week and he hardly seems to fart at all. He never has breath issues either.. Note that all digs are different and what suits one, may not suit another dog.. Diet is pretty well trial and error until you find what works best for your dog... Thank's all for the help You might find that after eating canned food (which is full of salt) that he may refuse other things. When we get dogs like this, they don't get offered anything else (and we've yet to have one starve to death :p ) and within a week, they're eating the raw food. The only issue we ever have with this is dogs who aren't used to chewing- so we start them on raw mince, go to chicken necks, then wings and then finally frames. If they can manage raw frames, it's then frozen frames and raw lamb flaps. The problem with canned food is that jaw muscles don't get the exercise they need and the dog has to work much harder to chew raw food (which makes it less appealing) so best to take it slow, rather than trying once or twice and then giving up. It does take a bit of willpower to resist the sad eyes but for your dog's health, it's worth it.
