any dolers around that can help me?

I live near the Mort Estate.

I was shocked when I got these poor hens as I thought I would have them for a few years, it seems their life spane is very short 3 - 4 years at the most poor things.

Hullo LB how are you?

look around for auctions I know they have them down here every six months or so. Also check out the shows, they often have chooks. That way you can get in contact with the breeders and see whats around your area. But I reacon there would have to be some livestock autions up there.

Hi Louise,

I'm just out of Toowoomba and we have six ex-battery chooks adopted about three months ago. We were also told that we'd probably only have them for a couple of years - apparently because the egg production is so intensive it substantially shortens their lifespan. Hopefully time will prove wrong and with the tender loving care they are getting now they may live a bit longer.

It has been such a pleasure to see them emerge from near bald, bewildered and frightened birds into "normal" hens. We also have five light sussex chooks, but once the battery chooks pass on I will certainly be getting some more, it feels so good to know that they have at least enjoyed a lovely "retirement".

Check out gumtree, there are usually heaps of ads for purebred chooks on there.

Shame you are so far away - the RSPCA on the central coast of NSW has Silky chickens!

Speaking of chickens, Denise from PAWS and I were trying to catch 2 loose ex-battery chickens on Sunday morning. A truck overturned on a major road a week ago and all but 8 chickens were recaptured. We had found 2 of them, 1 was turned into my vet so 7 are still missing.

It isn't easy to catch them and we were so wary of them running onto the 6 lane road ...

With a little help from passers by, we had the 2 of them safely crated and then we drove them to a friend's house where they are much more comfortable. They've been to the vet for a check up too ... waiting to hear results.

What breeds are you after specifically. Often the breed and other poultry clubs can put you in touch with local breeders (just like in dogs!) . Also check out Andy Vardys Backyard poultry website which is the chook equivalent of DOL. I breed Bantam Faverolles and Belgian d'Uccle so can provide more info on them if that is what you are after.

Hi LB

I have had mostly ex battery hens - because I think they should be free - and I love the way they sit on the ground looking at the sky, going "waaaaaaaaaark" when you first put them on the grass.

And mine have all lived until they were drooling old geriatrics, getting about on walking frames and having to reread the directions on "how to lay eggs" because their minds had gone because they were so old. Well over 7, most of them.

And they religiously laid an egg a day. Even in the off season.

Look up "hatcheries" in the phone book. There used to be one on the New England highway which had all sorts of fancy chicks - not even sure if it still exists.

Like already mentioned, try getting in contact with your local poultry club. You may get lucky and find one of their members have what you are looking for. If not they should be able to put you in contact/ direct you to someone how does.

If you are after a rare breed try contacting a club that specialises in rare breeds, the rare breeds trust does poultry and I know we have a local branch.

If you know what breed you are looking for get in contact with their breed club. (most breeds have at least one) if it's a very rare breed you are after you may have to look out of area to obtain any.

My father and I breed Plymouth Rocks in large white, black and dark barred, and bantam dark barred and silver pencilled. We've had silkies, Pekins and dorkings, and have been heavily involved with our local poultry club, rare breeds club and a few breed specific clubs. So if you have any questions etc. feel free to drop me a line.

Hey Jed, it's great to know that your girls had a much longer life than I had been led to believe - gives me hope that my girls will be around longer than expected. We don't get an egg a day from all of them, but that's okay, the eggs are just a bonus (between them and my light sussex there's plenty of eggs to go around anyway), it was just such a pleasure being able to see these girls rehabilitate from the misery they had endured.

We're just waiting for these girls to completely feather up - not long now - so they can join the sussex in the large chookie pen (ex-battery girls are currently in a fenced off section so they don't get bullied), then I think I'll go and get a half dozen more. We have a chookie pen of around 1/2 an acre, so there's plenty of room and the dogs love a feed of eggs once a week - it's a win/win.
