A must watch I think.

From the Rescued with Love blog: http://www.rescuedwi...u-re-the-voice- & Saving Pets blog: http://www.savingpet...-kill-shelters/

Rescued with Love

Two weeks ago I received a phone call from SBS Insight - they had been given my name and wanted to know if I would talk to them about "Shelter Killing". An hour and a half later of brutal honesty, recommending other contacts - the Interviewer realized that it was not about breeding too many animals and why they end up in pounds, but a complex and difficult world - where we see large Animal Welfare facilities & Council Pounds failing the animals they were designed to protect.

<SNIP>

So filming occured in Sydney last night. Not much has been said yet. But it was time. Time for those who have needed and wanted to speak out - finally had a major outlet on TV to speak for Companion Animals. To speak about Australia's Dirty little Secret. The convenience killing of pets. As we have spoken out for many years, raised concerns, made a noise, and lived with fear of being shut out of pounds and shelters for trying to save and improve the chances for animals - last night opened the doors for exactly that.

Edited to add the details for Insight: http://www.sbs.com.au/insight/episode/overview/501/The-Tail-End

I sincerely hope that there was a differentiation made between puppyfarmers (aka commercial breeders) and registered breeders at some point.

No mention of registered breeders at all the whole night Sheridan but I think it was clear what they were talking about when they discussed puppy farmers. They had the guy from Banksia Park/ACA Breeders proudly stating he has 300-400 breeding dogs on his property. I couldn't help but pipe up at that.

I was at the filming of it last night (and got to have a dig at a puppy farmer which was satisfying). It will be interesting to see how it comes across after edit. Well worth watching.

Nina you were mentioned and praised strongly by Tabby

Really !! I hope they edit that bit out then, lol. Nice of him but really dont want my name mentioned on tv and I havent done anything different to any of the pounds I deal with........

If it's any consolation he only said your first name! But he mentioned you probably three times and was basically saying it's because of you that their kill rates are now so low and you do a wonderful job

Nina deserves all the recognition she gets. I think there's a wonderful "Australian Story" to be made about rescuers. There are people who have been doing the work for years and years and years, week in, week out. The RSPCA and LDH get all the public recognition and (frequently undeserved) kudos, but there are many rescuers who have just quietly gone ahead and done the work who really deserve recognition.

Thanks for the heads up, Aphra. And good on the rescuers, RWL & others, who stepped up to the plate to speak out.

I'm with Sheridan on the point that, when puppy farming is being discussed, it should be a case of 'compared with what'... in terms of what the ethical registered breeders do. That group have scientific evidence that their breeding/raising/homing practices lead to dogs being less likely dumped down the track. The terms 'breeder' and 'registered breeder' need to be explained.

Meanwhile kudos to SBS for sussing out the general topic. Now to spread word to encourage lots of people to watch it!

I don't know so much - I am noticing more often these days adverts on Gumtree selling pedigreed dogs sometimes only very young. I often wonder whether the breeder is aware one of their own is being sold off :(

The stats were based on Q'ld university research. Statistical significance means chances are less that dogs from ethical registered breeders will be dumped due to behaviours relating to lack of socialisation. Similar research found a trend among relinquishing owners that the dog 'hadn't met their expectations.'

This does not mean that all dogs from registered breeders will not be dumped or passed on. To believe that, would be magical thinking.

So to believe that no pedigree dogs would turn up for rehoming...like being advertised on gumtree... would be magical thinking.

Oh that is absolutely correct. I have just noticed a few lately advertised whereas in the past it seemed very unusual.

When I was looking for an irish terrier breeder - I found her in the newspaper - didn't know about dogswest back then! :) Or have access to the internet (actually, I didn't have a computer then either. Kate, who came from her, is now 11.5 years old. Where did the time go?)
