Everlilly
Hi all, I apologize if this has been addressed before, I tried a few different search terms but I wasn't really sure exactly what it's called and came up with nothing. I have a gorgeous 10 week old maltese x poodle pup who has "leaky eyes" or "eye gunk". My first puppy when I was young (a maltese) had this and I used to be able to just wipe it away with a damp cloth, but this stuff goes hard really quickly and I'm not sure how to clean it off without hurting Teddy. He's sensitive enough about grooming (we're working on it, daily brushing etc..) so I don't want to traumatize him with ripping his facial hair off by accident. I would just leave it til his washings, but it's clearly bothering him, he keeps pawing at his eye area/face. Is there any grooming secrets to cleaning this off? I'd prefer not to use scissors if possible, he's still learning to sit still for grooming and I'd be super scared of him thrashing and me poking him in the eye. Guest lavendergirl
I have the same problem with my little fluffy. There are all sorts of products available at the pet store which claim to clean around eyes. I find it just as good to wipe each day with a very moist cloth - it must become part of the daily routine to prevent a build-up. If he already has hardened gunk there just moisten a couple of times a day until it comes off easily - don't pull at it as it hurts their eyes and he will be less tolerant each time. Give him a little treat as you are wiping.
*kirty*
If his eyes are bothering, you need to find out why. He might have a problem with his eyes causing the irritation and goop. Edited September 11, 2012 by taketwo

Normally they get teary eyes when there is any small fine hair got into their eyes. Which then leads to the gunk. My Snowy has it often. He tears. Every day for few times I had to 'scrap' off the hair out of his eyes with my finger. Kind of easy when you get used to doing it. Just find out which part of the hair / eye lashes got into the eyes, pull the end of the hair from the corner of the eyes, out it goes. the gunk, I used steel comb to comb through it from side, get it out as much as I can then use tissue to wipe it off. I clean Snowy daily at the eyes because the hair that gets into the eyes bothers him always. He will try to paw or scratch his face onto anything. Xyz
Eye discharge is not 'normal' in any dog, especially if it is drying to 'gunk' even tearing is usually caused by misplaced hairs. A vet visit is warranted.
frufru
Put your hand under Teddy's chin and hold his face gently in your hand - wipe with a warm and quite damp washer. If this fails to remove "the gunk" use a very fine comb (I use what is referred to as a moustache comb) - comb from under Teddy's eye towards you. His eyes need to be cleaned every morning. I would also ask the vet to check his eyes next time you are in - if they appear irritated then I would be off to the vet soonish.
persephone
I also think finding the reason/s WHY will lead to better management :) remember- you may have to do this for the next 15 years!!! It is not normal for dogs ...either . best of luck with it :)
ann21
What about using cotton balls soaked in warm water? The gunk might come off more easily then
WreckitWhippet
Have the eyes examined Take a good look at diet The more times you wet the area, the bigger the chance of dermatitis or skin infections occurring Have the face clipped back short as Poodles would
frufru
NPersonally I don't like to see poodle crosses with a clipped poodle face as they generally don't have the nice shaped head of the poodle - the Teddy bear Trim looks good because it leaves face hair but you remove the hair under the eyes
