quangle
Hi, I just cut the back bone out of a chicken before I roasted it. It is ok to give it to my dog isn't it? 18 month old springer spaniel. I'm almost certain it is fine, but am just a bit wary of chicken so thought I would double check. Thanks
Dame Aussie
We give ours chicken frames, as long as it's raw it should be fine :)
minimax
Why wary of chicken?
quangle
No reason I guess, just easily influenced by old wives tales
Dame Aussie
Ours get loads of chicken, it's their favourite, necks, legs, frames etc. If you are worried about them getting sick, you can freeze it first which kills any nasties, but if it's fresh it should be fine. minimax
Chicken is probably the primary meat mine get, at least in bones.
Crisovar
RAW chicken carcasses, pieces etc are perfectly fine for dogs providing they are of suitable size for the dogs breed and chewing style. Cooked chicken bones or any cooked bones for that matter are a big NO. I feed chicken frames, necks, wings, marylands, entire birds halved, turkey necks, wings, on a nearly daily basis to whomever the portion size suits. tlc
I don't feed frames to my guys only due to my oldest boy always brings back up the vertebrae a few hours later. It's weird he just vomits up a pile of little bones, even if he has had other stuff to eat after the chicken. But mine get wings and necks and have never had any trouble. BC Crazy
My 2 get a section of cut up raw chic frame daily & they love it . Only ever raw not cooked :) Had to edit just to add I always supervise meals especially when there is bones of any type, just never know if they could choke on something. Mrs Rusty Bucket
my EH vomits up things like chicken wings. Cooked chicken bones seem to go straight through - but freaks me out - stuff we find tossed into the hedges at the local park. Grrr. Most dogs can eat raw bones just fine. Certain dogs - eg hoovers (inhale their food without chewing it into smaller pieces) - can't. PS if you're worried about it - just supervise and pay attention to how your dog eats the food. If there isn't much chewing involved you may need to freeze and or hold it to encourage chewing into smaller pieces.
