10 Week Old Pup Issues

Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum but I have recently purchased a beautiful miniature dachshund named Walter. He is such a loving little thing, however, if he is alone all he does is bark really loudly and then when he's with you hes either sleeping or biting you like crazy. I know this is all very normal but I would like some advice as to how I can nip it in the bud so Wally doesn't keep these bad habbits for the rest of his life. His bark is so loud you can hear it from the end of my long street and he is breaking skin on my nieces when they play with him. Also he doesn't 'whinge' at night but he does his LOUD bark, and so our neighbours don't complain we just let him sleep on the end of our bed. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've been in the exact same boat as you with our mini-dachshie puppy "Dasher".

I'm not sure if you've had a hunt around on this forum yet, but I would highly recommend giving my thread a browse.

We've reduced the seperation anxiety by doing lots of gradual exposure to being left alone for periods. The biting we're still getting on top of, but a yelp followed by ignoring her after she nips has helped a lot. Also pork rind bone chewy thing replacements gives our hands & fingers a break :laugh:

Have a read anyway & shoot through any specific questions. I'm more than happy to pass on what I've learnt over the few months we've had her.

Thanks heaps for your reply Matt! I have surprisingly made some progress today as he is having a sleep in his bed all by himself as we speak! He is off to puppy school tonight... Hopefully he won't be the naughty one in the class ha ha! I will have a read for sure thank you so much. If Dasher is the puppy in your picture she is beautiful.

Good work, great to hear little Walter is sleeping by himself. We have so far resisted the temptation to letting her in our room at night, but at least it's taught her to be comfortable in her OWN bed and keeps at least a few rooms in the house 'doggie free'!.

You'll love puppy school. Dasher just graduated from her 4 week puppy school sessions last week. We went to one at Stafford (Bris Nth) and found the trainer was great and very aware of different breeds & more importantly SIZES mixing with one another. It's more an education for the owners really, so expect it to be lots of pup socialising rather than anything too physical or demanding on little Walter.

Oh wow, we're on the north side of Brisbane too (The Gap) We're going to a local puppy school that my sister and her husband took her pups too. He should be right. He will just be so much smaller then all the other puppies ha ha! :laugh:

Oh wow Meg, Wally is just ADORABLE :D

He'll definitely be one of the smaller pooches at puppy school tonight...he's tiny!
