Years ago my breeder mentor told me after I had my girl mated not to bath her so followed her advice and never have done this but is there a reason Didn't think to ask her - I wonder if the actual submerging her in water may cause some infection but what about a shower bath surely that wouldn't be a problem. Also is it safe to worm just after mating . I always worm before but know a girl who missed doing this and wonder how long after is ok.

It is an old wives tale about not bathing after a mating but maybe stems from the days of submerging the dog in water which is really not done any more. Lots of bitches get mated, bathed and taken to a show within a day or so.

I wouldn't be worming a recently mated bitch. It should be done before but with the monthly heartworm/intestinal wormers, sometimes you need to dose them earlier than the usual 6 weeks into the pregnancy, depending on the heartworm risk.

I just recently consulted a Reproduction and IV specialist.

He informed me thta after mating there are no restrictions on the dog's normal routine.

However, I would not deliver any meds after mating, including anitbiotics, unless it was a 'life or death' situation.

I would wait for a while to bath a dog after mating, and especially avoid any flea rinse or medicated shampoos. If you need to shower them, just a plain soap - not Teatree or pennyroyal.

As said, worming should be done before mating, not after.

Changes in hormone levels during pregnancy cause immature roundworms that are sitting in the tissues of the body to become active & even enter the milk supply, these can infect the puppies when they feed from her.

Hookworms can also be transferred through the milk.

Your pregnant dog needs to be wormed 10 days prior to giving birth & every 3 weeks while she is feeding her pups.

The pups are wormed from 2 weeks of age & wormed every 2 weeks until 12 weeks of age.

Your bitch should be dewormed with an all wormer, at 4 and 6 weeks of pregnancy.

This is important to ensure she does not infect her newborn pups.

So, the jury is out on whether to worm during pregnancy or not.

worm the bitch 4-5 weeks into gestation, then when the pups are wormed.

I do this too.

The change in immune balance in the pregnant bitch means that worms that lie dormant in her system are able to reactivate and she becomes the source of infection for the pups. Worming them all at the same time means all sources of the worms get rid of them at the same time.

I was going to worm my bitch, she is day 7 now...should I not worm her then?

I have always wormed before mating & 2 weeks after whelping! No problems here at all, no worms either.
