Tremors In An Addisons Dog

Hi there

I'm new to this forum so please be kind! :o

My 3 year old dog was recently diagnosed with Addisons disease. He's on Florinef (sp?) and Pred twice daily. Prior to diagnosis (it had obviously been brewing for a little while) he occasionally had these strange tremors at night time. They're like an electric jolt is going through his whole body - every muscle seems to twitch simultaneously.

The episodes last between an hour to an hour and a half, and always at night.

Since they started, there have been a couple of months between them. However, since diagnosis about a month ago, he's had two tremor episodes. They do appear to be getting worse in intensity and frequency (within each episode).

The most recent was last night. Unlike before, last night he seemed to lose his balance a little bit, not a real stumble, but crossed his legs and walked sideways. He also kept leaning against things, and walked down the hallway leaning on the wall like he was drunk!

He's awake the whole time, and gets quite upset by it. He comes into me and growls at me. Not agressively, it's his "do something/feed me/take me out/general i want attention" growl. He comes up for cuddles, but he can't settle. He tries lying down for about 10 seconds, then is up again. I don't know if they are causing him pain, or just irritating him. Last night he was really out of sorts. i got up to a trail of destruction through the house where he had scratched or knocked things over. He also eats and drinks during the episode - not sure if he thinks that will help?

Anyway, the point of this is i am wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar with and Addisons dog? Is there anything i can do to make him comfortable during an episode?

He was a bit out of sorts this morning - lethargic, upset tummy, not toileting like usual, but he seems to have perked up after getting his meds.

I'm new to the world of Addisons, so if anyone has advice on ways to complement what the vet is doing and to make my little man more comfortable, please let me know! Thanks!

Welcome , and I'm sorry you and your dog are having problems.

No experience here, but what did the vet say about this latest episode.?

Agree and welcome!

Has he had his electrolytes checked?? I'm sure your vet will suggest what's best -)

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

The episode before last, I managed to get him to an after hours vet and had his blood tested during an episode. Electrolytes only slightly out of normal range.

We were having weekly checks, last one on Tuesday, and have moved to monthly checks now. Tues results ok with K barely on the high side.

Vet thinks pred might be bringing out the epilepsy (?). So we have reduced it slightly as of today.

Just hoping there is something I can do during the actual tremors to make them more tolerable. Hopefully someone can come up with some suggestions! :-)
