Guest RosieFT
I have always loved the look of these dogs on 'paper' and finally met one in person yesterday on a walk. Oh my, he was just beautiful! I didn't realise that they were actually small dogs. This one was similar in height to my fox terrier. He was soooooo friendly and so lovely. The owner was amazed when I asked if it was a shiba inu - "How do you know!" he answered . LOL. i asked him a zillion questions. I looked in the breed 101 and didn't see them listed? Just looking for some general information about them. I asked this guy if they shed and he told me he shed heaps, but the furminator helps. he also said he does not like dogs bigger than him, or any dogs that rush up to sniff his back end. But that he loved people more than anything - and he certainly was friendly. Is this pretty typical?

Guest RosieFT
Thank you Ams ! I already knew from my dog books that a Shiba would be too much dog for me. But wow, they are so lovely to look at and touch. LOL Keeping in mind I own a fox terrier and there are a lot of warnings out there about owning this breed, I think the Shiba is another step up ! cannibalgoldfish
If you dont let them off leash (poor recall)and keep them away from small furry animals and birds, can handle them blowing coat and having a snow storm in the yard plus don't let them try to bully other dogs they may be fine for you. :D

cannibalgoldfish
Go to the shiba profile on Dol and look to the right of the page. They are so much smaller than you think :D In another note, one of my boys turned ten this week!

What if they are raised with cats? no go? Hopefully i can see the Shiba again on our walks and get my fixes from him
cannibalgoldfish
Gah! I posted a reply and it has vanished... That photo is my boy boxhead (Wylie) yhis is my other old man Loki When I got Loki his breeder asked all the right questions. and she picked me out the perfect dog as a non shiba owner. He was so docile and whimpysubmissive.. Wylie was bought a a show dog and sadly for him it never happened. He still thinks he is god but doesn't all shibas? That's the thing, if you get a shiba, dont let him think he is a 7 foot tall amoured killing machine. Pull him back on his leash, make him sit and think about why he cant take em/seduce em. my boys together Opps, you mentioned cats... Well, mine are just getting used to my cat. My old cat used to beat the crap out of their little puppy bodies so they are terrified of cats.. :D Ok, since my old cat died they are getting used to my new cat. She scares the heck out of them... Get the point? It's about socialisation. My boys are fine with cats, but walking them outside, all cats that run must be chased. Except the big scary tom down the road that jumps up and chases the dogs back....you cant run from him...
Guest RosieFT
Thanks for sharing. :) They sound like fun dogs that keep you on your toes. Well you can see from my signature that my terrier just 'hates' my cat. But is VERY interested in other cats.
