~Rumour~
Apologies if this has been posted already. A man who stabbed a pet dog to death before taking photos of it on his mobile phone has been jailed for 14 months. Aaron James Casey, 28, yesterday appeared before magistrate Jan Stevenson for sentencing over committing an act of aggravated cruelty on an animal, stealing a dog and stalking and intimidating with intent to cause physical or mental harm. He will serve a non-parole period of six months. Casey pleaded guilty to the charges in Bathurst Local Court in April when further charges of torturing, beating and causing the death of an animal and entering enclosed lands without excuse were withdrawn by the prosecution. Advertisement Police alleged Casey beat a Staffordshire bull terrier before stabbing it with a knife, severing part of its spinal cord and puncturing its lungs on September 9 last year. Police facts tendered to the court told how Casey was sitting in the front yard of his Stewart Street home with four other people, including a nine-year-old boy, who was playing with his pet dog, when the terrier wandered into Casey's yard and growled at Casey's dog. Police alleged Casey picked up the terrier and punched it in the head several times before it ran away. Witnesses told police Casey then threatened to stab the dog and went to get a knife. They alleged Casey went with the nine-year-old boy to find the dog and, after locating it in Browning Street, took it into a shed and stabbed it to death. Police said Casey took pictures of the dead dog on his mobile phone and showed them to two witnesses when he returned home, but threatened to kill them if they went to the police. Casey, who was already in custody serving an eight-month jail term for driving while disqualified, was sentenced to 14 months jail with a non- parole period of six months to date from May 30, 2012 in relation to the aggravated cruelty matter. For stealing a dog, he was sentenced to six months imprisonment from May 30, 2012, and for stalk and intimidate, six months jail from May 30, 2012. All sentences are to be served concurrently.
