I thought it was to do with the card, but apparently not, the Canon 7D really is wonderful for action.

has to do with both - but a camera can only write to a card as fast as its maximum write speed will allow. Believe the fastest Canon is the IDS which is specific for pro sports photogs, and so has a high transfer speed. But if there is a slow card being used, then even if the camera is capable of writing fast, if there is a slow card then that will slow down the transfer of data - so you will get the best results overall with a fast card and a fast camera. If you are already using the fast card, then it won't go any faster unless you cut image quality
