What is the average life span of a domestic short haired female desexed cat?

Google came up with average 14 years for indoor cats.

Two years ago I adopted a cat from a sydney vet .She was brought in by her owners and said the cat annoyed them could she be put to sleep. The vet checked her over found her to be in good health and asked the owners if the vet could re-home her instead? The owners signed a letter and said yes.

The cat had been kept as an only cat and indoors she was 18 years old records true as she was an RSPCA kitten when first adopted.

Ive had her for 2 years and she is in good health although thin and missing teeth. She is everybit cat and showed an emormous amount of hunting spirit when our daughters guinea pigs came inside ahhahahhahahha.

SO we know she is 20 years old and still very mobile and happy she goes outside randomly but mostly hangs inside.

I had a lovely desexed cat called Pepe who lived until he was 18 yrs old, (He was bought as a young kitten) and was pts because of kidney failure. My daughter has a spayed female cat at present who is still going strong at 18 yrs old. She was bought from a petshop as a little kitten. As with everything it is the luck of the draw, whatever is meant to be, same with dogs and people.

fellow cat breeder had a 22 year old cat who died in between their 22 & 23 birthday. Oldest cat I have had personally was 1 18 and 1 16, so I would say your old timer is doing really well, Bless you for making his golden years the best for him

mmmmm so christabell is not alone! I also have a 16 year old male .The thing is here the cats all hate her My older cats always beat her up not sure why she does growl at them even when they just look at her! she took awahile to settle in but is fine now sometimes when she is sleeping I do give her a little poke --sounds odd but with her age and the fact she does sleep alittle heavy at times I often wonder.

My cat Panther died at about 20yo. She just went to sleep and didn't wake up, all very peaceful. She was an outside puss too and got fed supermarket food, lol. She totally ruled the place right up until the day she died. If she was sitting on the door mat the dogs were too scared to walk past her! The only thing that really changed as she got old was her fur got a bit scruffy.

maybe we should change the websites because it seems our cats are living and doing very well way past the average. :D

I was caring for kittens from a pound and they all had cat flu I was so worried as it turned out the 16 year old and christabell didn"t catch it while all the others did and two passed away.

Is there maybe something different in the cats of the past and now? they don"t seem to be as robust? My old feller was threatened by the neighbours one day he went missing 4 days later he turned up at the gate he had a factured skull was wet dirty and staved one side of his head was caved in among other injuries. Our neighbours moved out shortly after and my cat healed completely he was 16--------------Sadly one morning I woke up and found he curled up he had died in his sleep I couldn"t believe it to survive such horrific injuries then pass quietly in his sleep

YET

I have a kitten from renbury farm here he has had cat flu twice ear mites and half his hair fall out !!! all under 6 months old surely something enviromental is changing our cats?

Maybe we could start a thread or a whole forum just for our oldies be them dog or cat Im sure just like us they come with a whole new set of life changes and I for one would love to be able to discuss them with others in the hope I can better help my oldies when the time comes

Yes muttrus it would be good for the oldies to have their own thread, I have a Tibetan Terrier who is 16 yrs old today :birthday:  Prue, she had her tail removed a couple of months ago due to a cancer on it, she is blind, and a bit arthritic, a bit demented, but I'm sure she sleeps with her ears flapping because she doesn't miss getting off the bed for feed time, or our feed time for that matter.  Have to carry her out into the yard for a pee, because by the time she found her way out there, it would be too late.   Gotta love them

This is her taken a couple of weeks ago.

ohhhhhh HAPPY BIRTHDAY.PRUE

So thats two votes for an oldies thread? funny Im only 36 years old and have a cat who"s 20 and one who"s 16 I don"t even have enough life experience let alone enough to help my oldies hahahahhahha.

I remember when our old dog was going down hill eyes and ears gone bone weak bladder going teeth removed all before his back legs went I wish there were others I could turn to for advice --I mean real caring people not just google .

Average lifespan of an outdoor cat is 4-5yrs, but indoor cats can live well into their late teens/early twenties. Pretty sure the oldest cat was a Siamese that lived to 32.

Old cats can suffer from high blood pressue leading to blindness, so watch for any signs of vision loss.

Wow, all these cats doing so well!

My girl turned 14 in April I think, and still going fairly strong - she seems a bit demented as she has to be walked to her food bowl all the time ( :banghead: ) but then again maybe she just has us well trained  I've pretty much grown up with her, will be very hard to see her go, as I don't even remember life without her...even though I am a few years older than her. She is an indoor cat, and I hope there is many more years with her :D

I third...or fourth or fifth an oldies thread! :D
