I've had more than one expert proclaim that the reason he is so big is that he is an Alsatian (not a German Shepherd), or that the black and gold are German Shepherds and the sables are Alsatians. I've tried to explain Alsatian is not a breed and that they are all German Shepherds but generally fail to educate anyone. The number of people I meet that swear Alsatians and GSDs are two separate breeds surprises me too. These people also don't seem interested in a history lesson. No, GSDs are not uncontrollable vicious dogs. This was from a woman with an out of control toddler, directed at the calm GSD by my side in a shop. They are separate breeds with different structures and temperaments. They are not, as one person recently told me, 'GSD scraps' :-( I've also been told they are an abomination, a worthless mutt and that they shouldn't exist. I've been told by others they are just a GSD with a different name just so we can get more money for the pups. Apparently they are also a dog with no purpose. These comments are all just from this year :-( Just do what I do and smile politely and say 'isn't it funny, my dog is sitting here thinking the exact same thing about you!' They do both belong to the bull breed family as do Bulldogs, American Staffordshire Terriers, Bull Terriers etc.. Yes they are strong and tenacious but 'Lockjaw' is a myth. SBT's are not a naturally agressive breed. They are a people pleaseing breed. Unfortunatly some people are pleased by agression and encourage this in their dogs. These people are idiots. I do not want to make $1000 by mating my SBT with yout bull breed bitch. I think I'd have made $1000 by now for everyone who has come up and asked me to put Vulcan over their bull-whatever bitch. Vulcan has been desexed since 6 months. Edited t add: [*]Many (most?) SBT's are dog friendly, especially when properly socialised at a young age. I said No She said – awww why not, you need to let her have at least 1 litter I said – no I don’t, I don’t want her to have puppies She looked at me like I was crazy that I didn’t want my dog to have puppies.. SHEESH! I was so angry because its people like her that breed dogs for the sake of it or for the money. sorry a bit off topic there. well maybe not - its the misconception with ANY breed that bitches need to have at least one litter before getting de-sexed. Sares Posted July 19, 2012 Share Posted July 19, 2012 Greyhound - he must need heaps of walking (no, less than the great dane!), he must be vicious (when he was muzzled, now has a Greenhound collar), he's too skinny. Great dane - she must eat a lot, she's too big for you to walk, and she's not a dane, she's a weimaraner (she's actually a small blue great dane), must be good guard dog (will smooch for cuddles!). The earlier poster that asked about greys wearing muzzles, in NSW it's an old law that has only recently been changed to allow them to be assessed for a Greenhound collar, and this entitles them to be muzzle free when on lead. My understanding of the law is that it was because the greyhounds were taught to chase prey when being taught to race, so it was to stop them attacking small animals when out and about - although on lead, this would not be an issue I would have thought, and also they tend to nip when they are excited in race. Harry used to nip us on the bum when he first came to us, but we taught him not to, so no issue now. Our Harry has no perceptible prey drive (that's probably why he flunked training!) so him getting a Greenhound collar wasn't too hard. He's also the most tolerant dog I have met. When we are out and about and people, especially kids, approach him, he just stands there and let's them pat and cuddle him, and has never reacted badly to being approacehd by any person or animal. Thank you for explaining that! I always pass someone walking their greyhounds in the mornings and they look so sweet so I always wondered why they had the muzzles on. The tri I owned is a BC cross and the fact that he is a show champion means nothing because he knows his shelties. My merles are commonly called old dogs and I need to watch the blue eyed one as it is a sign of an unstable temperament. Oh and the most common miniature Lassie or even worse a baby Collie, get that all the time Yep get all those.. the main one I get though is My tri-coloured sheltie is definitely NOT a border collie pup. I've had the same conversation. I think people assume if you spend the money on a pedigreed pet you MUST want it to re-produce. People used to cross the road with their kids and their dogs when Jed wore his and now that he has his green collar they just walk right up and pat him. So yes all greyhounds who wear muzzles are nasty dogs. You should buy him a green collar because he would not have to wear a muzzle then (my favourite) They chase all small fluffy animals.
