Third Acl Opp

Recommended Posts

Hey All

I have been contacted by a friend of mine who has a dog who has had his third ACL..she is after some help as she isnt sure what is the best thing to do..

Oak has just had his third ACL opp 3 weeks ago and they are saying he is reacting to the tie (false ligament they put in ) which is why the hasnt been able to heal from each opp . They now want to take it out on Monday as they believe he has enough scar tissue holding his leg together !!

Does this sound right ????

Thanks for the help

Has it been done at the normal vet? If so get a second opinion from Rivergum Referral services from Tom Hill ir Niel Gibson, they are fantastic. Gibbs had surgery done by Tom Hill he is a fantastic ortho surgeon

Chicko there are people who chose to follow conservative management to heal a torn ACL and successfully do so so yes scar tissue can hold the leg together. There is apparently no evidence to suggest that one is necessarily better in the long run and like anything there are a number of factors to take into consideration.

A second or specialist opinion never hurts in ortho cases though.

One of my border collies snapped her cruciate. The operation to fix it failed. The vet wanted to re-operate but only gave me a 30% chance of the second op working so I declined, mainly because the dog didn't come out of the op as well as I would have liked.

She did develop enough scar tissue to hold the joint in place but did have a limp. The other legs all stayed sound and she lived another 12 years like that.

Thanks for all the info, He has had the tie taken out and is off to a specialist end of the week. The vet who took it out (different to the one who put it in) was annoyed they hadnt said to go to a specialist sooner..they now wont give the vet records to the new vet either.

I just had my follow up apt with Rivergum today and could not be happier with their professionalism and was STUNNED when i was told that my follow up apt had no charge!?!? I double checked to be sure.

I am not being pushed into having my dog operated on either, rather the opposite - am encouraged to go the conservative route first ie. anti inflam and rest.
