I've read some older threads with great suggestions from the very knowledgeable DOL photographers, many of whom do breathtaking work :) I'm aware that due to my preference of point and click snapshots, I'm not going to be looking at anything that'll take magazine quality photographs. I just don't go to many places I'd be comfortable lugging a huge camera and lens around and set up for the perfect shot; I'm basically a snapshotter who likes a little camera in the pocket to pull out and get trigger happy with whenever there's a great subject (basically something with fur!) My subjects will mainly be dogs, so something that can capture photos indoors, outdoors and get some motion shots would be awesome. Both my kids are waterdogs so I'm umming and arring over having a waterproof camera sitting around. (Theoretically this could be an entirely separate camera if a waterproof one isn't otherwise versatile enough to suit my needs) Budget would certainly be nothing over $500, so basically what do you consider will get you the best picture quality without going into the many hundreds of dollars :) I'm currently using a Panasonic Limux DMC-FH2 which occasional in good daylight gets me the sort of quality I generally consider the best of what I'll see from this particular camera: But I loose a lot of detail in low light, no matter which settings I trial, and a lot on motion shots, and whenever I zoom even a little, and even in daylight success is quite sporadic. A little better quality would not go too far astray :) I've also begun to get these dots scattered over my pictures, which I am guessing is due to sand sneaking into the camera as I have cleaned the lens with lens cleaner to no avail. I'm not sure it's worth sending it in for cleaning since I'm thinking about a new one anyway. A couple of months ago, I had opportunity to play around with a Canon powershot SX 230 HS ..and I am in love ............ No money to buy one ... but I can dream :p info in THIS LINK It delivered very acceptable natural light indoor shots .. just hand held ..and 15 minutes after me first picking it up .. and nice colours outdoors (these do not show all that well...) I have to disagree in part with Rozzie on the coolpix I have one and I hate it with a passion. At a stretch the photos outside are ok but inside they are aweful, worst money I ever spent. Now in saying that if you bought one of the expensive ones they might be better, mine cost around $300. Out of curiosity Rozzie do you have one? How is it? I've had a canon in the Ixus range it was awesome, finally died because imwas too hard on it. I currently have the Canon G1X but it's around $800. The one Pers mentioned is great and THIS is another one I have heard great things about. I had/have a coolpix as a point and shoot as well and hate it. Couldn't even tell you where it is now. I was never happy with the pics I got out of it. I wanted a handbag camera for times I didnt want to take the SLR and it was not a cheap coolpix either. I don't want to bother changing lenses etc :) That's what my big cameras are for. I want it because it shoots in RAW and has full manual controls. My main reasons for getting it were the seamless panorama option, waterproof, and the hd video was in mp4 format (which meant I could edit it in iMovie). Basically thought it would bd great for our upcoming Fijian honeymoon but it will be interesting to see how it goes in everyday scenarios as well as indoor shots. Viewfinder image is cr*p ... but it has heaps of controls, and a 24X zoom . And a similar reason for me wanting it, easy to grab and go when I don't want to lug the big banger around. I am thinking about one of the Panasonic Lumix cameras (not sure of the model of it off the top of my head. I had a Lumix years ago and loved it so so much and used it til it was almost dead. I am seriously 'shopping' for a point and shoot at the moment so i dont have to lug an SLR around with me. Ohhh huga i want . kja Posted July 18, 2012 Share Posted July 18, 2012 Late to the party but here's my two cents for inexpensive, straight out of box shooting with few manual controls; based on mass research and tons of hands on: Tiny, versatile & hardy = Canon Elph/Ixus series. I wouldn't be without mine (SD1200, a few years old but still kicking) I paid about $120 and there are quite a few models in various price ranges available. Smallish, water/shock resistant = Panasonic TS3. Adore mine. Wouldn't spring for the extra cash for the newer TS4, myself. I paid about $230ish.
