Latoya
Hi all, I came home from work today to see my staffs eye was red and had gunk and was watery. He must be rubbing it as some of the hair around his eye is missing. I am thinking this is conjunctivitis but am not sure.. I rung around vets and everyone is booked up with tomorrow being Saturday. Does anyone have a home remedy I could use to clean his eye to hold him over until the monday vet visit.. Thanks x
persephone
make a cup of black tea. let it cool . Drip some into eye every couple of hours . Don't wipe or poke ....just rinse it with the cold black tea (can be squeezed from a tissue or cotton ball help over /away from the eye ). The tannic acid is a mild disinfectant . Phone vets again in teh morning - there may be a cancellation :)
piper
What persephone said and when you ring stress to them it is an injured eye - permanent damage can happen to eyes quickly so I don't mess around with them and just as well, last year when I thought Jazz had a bit of an infection she actually had a grass seed and it had already scratched the cornea. Fortunately due to quick attention we managed to avoid it ulcerating. Hopefully it is nothing more than an irritation for your guy but I would definitely be pushing to get it seen. Waiting all weekend is really not ideal.
teekay
I've always thought they get the yellow gunk with conjuntivitis. Same with my kids. As soon as i see the first sign I get out the salt and just bath the eye with boiled water with some salt in it, a couple of times a day. Usually clears it up but if you dogs eyes are that red that quick, I'm not sure it sounds like conjuntivitis. IME it takes longer to develop. Could be wrong though, it has been known
dancinbcs
Eye problems should always be considered an emergency and the vet should see then the same day. I would not be waiting until Monday. Surely the vets allow time for emergencies among the scheduled appointments.
Latoya
Thanks all!! I will ring everywhere and make sure someone see's him if not he'll be going straight to the emergency thanks :)

And DON'T put anything in it. The vet needs to see it as is.
*kirty*
Conjunctivitis is a symptom, not a diagnosis if that makes sense. It could be allergies or an ulcer or glaucoma or many other things causing the conjunctivitis. Don't ever use salt water to clean eyes as it dries them out. You can usr cool black tea or plain water to wipe away any muck. Good luck at the vets!

This is more serious than just yellow gunk though. Hope your boy gets some relief soon Latoya, poor boy must be very uncomfortable.
*kirty*
Well that's great, but if you ask an eye specialist they will tell you not to do it unless you know what is causing the gunk. Cooled tea is much safer (calendula tea is the best).
Latoya
Thank you everyone ! I used water to wipe it just to be safe and I rung my normal vet and explained the situation and said it was an emergency being his eyes are you all suggested, I visit the vet in an hour. Thanks Taketwo- I wasn't aware that it meant something else was the underlying problem as I had also noticed some weight loss today- so glad I've got him straight in this morning and didn't wait as you all suggested, much appreciated everyone thanks!!! Latoya
Hi Piper, Went well thank you! He does have conjunctivitis, but their is no damage to his cornea after doing a liquid dye test ( thank goodness!!) and I just need to apply a cream into both eyes twice a day for the next week. Glad I took all of your advice and went to the vet, would of hated myself if some permanent damage had been done. He's got me $540 this week on training with Jane Harper and the vet and new kongs lol expensive little things sometimes :) but you would never be without them !!! *kirty*
It sounds like allergic conjunctivitis (mucky eyes caused by allergies). Fingers crossed the cream does the trick! :)
piper
Great news that it is just a conjunctivitis and nothing else. :)
